Joninc, As fas as Night Beat goes, "I Lost Everything" definitely sounds like a RCA 77 on the vocal and "Little Red Rooster" positively sounds like a Neumann U-47. If you can clearly tell the difference in tone on those 2 tracks you'll be able to figure out the rest. United studios had Universal Aud...

Sam Cooke recorded some of his material at United Western. I'm pretty sure he didn't record anything at Stax. I've seen photos of Sam singing into a RCA 77DX and a Neumann U-47 or U-48 at United. Check out the Night Beat album, in particular. It's an amazing recording and you can easily tell which v...

Yes! I have a pair of the Tannoy System 15 DMT II and absolutely love them. On great recordings they sound truly wonderful and on everything else you hear the flaws. Very precise imaging & an effortless presentation. I'm powering mine with a Bryston 4B SST Pro amp. I really can't wait to hear them a...

If you check out his "What Have They Done to My Art?" essay on his website (required reading IMO) he does indeed rail against the execs. Bill

Subatomic wrote: "More artists and recordists are able to make a living making, playing and recording music these days." Hmmm, compared to when? I really think fewer and fewer artists are able to make a living from their music. It seems that importance of live music in our culture has been in somewh...

I have a '64 Princeton Reverb that I use a lot, and also a very cool rare Danolectro Pioneer Model 15 amp from '53- for better or worse it's the first amp built with a separate gain control and master volume. It has a really cool range of distorted tones for guitar, amplified harmonica and vocals. I...

Just wondering why you're particulary interested in the 77-DX? I have a pretty good mic collection, including a RCA 44-BX, BK-5A and a Coles 4038 and I find the 77-DX to get the least use out of all my ribbons. I'm not saying I don't like it or that sounds bad (it and the BK-5A were both reribboned ...

Re: The Worst of the Best
Love You is an acquired taste to be sure but I really like that record. Notwithstanding the new Smile, it's the last truly original creation from BW. I really dig those fuzzed out synth-bass lines and think it's a bold and unique production. Johnny Carson is just one of the strangest songs ever writ...

EV 635a. It's cheap and no matter what other mics you acquire down the road you'll want to hang on to it.

Re: Surf Rock sound?
I forgot to mention that a lot of the original surf guitarists used flatwound strings.

Re: Surf Rock sound?
Yes, the original Showman amps did not have a built-in reverb tank. Standalone Fender reverb tanks sound a lot different than the "built-in" ones, they have a separate "dwell" and "mix" controls for example. They can sound a lot "wetter" than the typical combo amp reverb.

Re: Producer Terry Melcher RIP
Yeah, that's sad. I'm a fan of a lot of his stuff (Bruce & Terry, Byrds, Paul Revere and the Raiders). I just picked up a Rip Chords cd last week actually... The Bruce & Terry stuff sounds like the work of people who were really having fun in a studio (which is IMO is really not all a too common or ...

Re: Surf Rock sound?
I play in a band that does a quite a few surf instros and I use a Jazzmaster into a Fender Vibrolux. It really depends on what kind a surf sound you're going for. If you're from the Dick Dale/Eddie & the Showmen/Dave Meyers etc. school (which is lots of double picking, heavy staccato, super wet reve...
