Mystery equipment on new Shins album
from an interview in Pitchfork: "Joe [Chiccarelli] did some really valuable consultation with me when I got started recording, and advised me to buy a certain piece of equipment, which significantly helped the sound quality." But there's no followup question! What is this mystery piece of gear? Time...

audio in via Creative soundcard
so my friend was over the other day and he was talking about trying to record into his PC using a Creative SoundBlaster card with an 1/8" audio in. he said 'when i try with the crappy little mic that came with the soundcard it works, but when i plug in a SM57 using an adaptor it doesn't work at all....

Re: my room sounds weird!
Ethan -- thanks for pointing me to your Acoustics FAQ. i've just skimmed it really quickly, but it's clear that it will answer my questions about this stuff. your graph showing the dips and peaks in a control room at mix position and in the rear corner looks a lot like what i'm experiencing, with th...

Re: my room sounds weird!
thanks so much for all the advice. i'll try the following things in various combinations: bass traps; sub-50Hz roll-off; some serious bass-oriented A/Bing; listening from the back of the room during mixing; a sound level meter. these are great suggestions. but only Chris Garges brings up the phase c...

my room sounds weird!
i have some pretty nice monitors (HR824s), but my room is not treated for monitoring or anything, and i've had the hardest time getting my mixes to translate. whenever i take them out of the room, there's always way too much bass -- like scary too much. and then tonight i was listening to a mix of m...

Re: No more guesswork!
where is the chart showing the appropriate settings for a Lo-Fi Indie Rock mix? i need to know what levels to use for Megaphone Vocals, Telephone-Filter Vocals, and Drum Kit Recorded to Cassette using a Single Shure 57. also, the slogan on the home page: "Motionizer. Motionizing music dreams since J...

just be wary about sending an e-mail inviting everyone you know to a 'clap party.'Clap party is lots of fun and you can pretty much invite anyone you know.

why cant you go used? thats where all the color is. [snip] seriously, why the "widely available new" criteria? doesnt make sense to me... really odd question it sounds more like asking, Hi I have 500$ and I want to buy a sound toy with it, but it's gotta be sorta cool, something I'm used to messing...

cheap equipment with character
i record at home on a DAW. my usual signal chain is a Studio Projects VTB1 preamp with an RNC as an insert, then into my digi001. the VTB1 and the RNC are relatively good for costing less than $200 apiece. what that means in this case is that they are both relatively transparent. they're not known f...

just to clarify
a drum kit is a common application for submixing, but it's not the only one. harmonized or double-tracked vocals might be another. but really, a submix is any set of tracks within a mix that are sent (usually via bussing or something similar) to a single destination to be processed as a single combi...
