Computer Science vs. Electrical Engineering
I was wondering which of these two majors would put me close to the forefront of groundbreaking research and development in the audio processing industry upon graduation (assuming i manage to find a good job). I'm assuming that audio software offers more to be explored if only because it hasn't been...

Re: M-Audio Speakers
Try a pair of very similarly priced KRK Rokit 5's. I compared them with the BX5's at a store and noticed a huge gap in the BX5 midrange. The high end on the BX5's seemed to be grossly overrepresented in my opinion. I wouldn't be able to listen to them for any long period of time without the 'icepick...

Novation Speedio Trackmaker
I know this came out really, really recently, but does anyone happen to have any experience with it? Is a USB interface ok now?

Re: By pass the board?
Phil Elvrum from the Microphones does exactly what you've described here and I don't know anyone else who has records that sound like his. The less stuff your sound goes through, the better.

Re: Wilco's free EP from their site...
Hey, speaking of this EP, how do you convert the downloaded .bin files into regular .mp3 for burning on a CD? Roxio only recognizes .mp3 as audio files.

Mike Patton (has it been done?)
Prefuse73
Autolux (started by former Failure bassist. it's a secret. www.autolux.net buy the demo and you won't believe it was done in a practice space)
Ian MacKaye and/or Guy Picciotto (this had to have happened sometime, right?)

Re: mic, line, and instrument level?
with that said, can someone explain impedance in the same quick fashion? i hate to be a hijacker, but i mention impedance ignorance in my thread, too (the one about 57s that overly references The Darkness).

The "Dark" SM-57
There was a thread a few weeks ago that attributed the SM-57's sometimes "dark" sound to the fact that the microphone does not match up with the impedance on certain preamps. The SM-57 was my first microphone and i've always regarded it as dark in comparison with my only other formal microphone, the...

Re: favorite wave file editors?
oh, right. audacity is one i used to use as well. it was good for a short while up until it started to crash everytime i used it. it didn't seem very stable to me, but it's almost like a free WaveLab, assuming that it doesn't crash too much on your computer. oh, and i never bothered to update it. go...

Re: favorite wave file editors?
Seconded (thirded?) for Steinberg WaveLab. I wouldn't use anything else. The functions and the layout just seem smooth to me. I think i've got version 2.0. Is there a more recent one?

Additional Mic Preamps for M-Audio Omni I/O
The Omni is great, but lately i've been feeling limited by the fact that i only have two preamps for digital recording. I'm wondering if anyone else with a similar setup has ever added an external preamp and, if so, which brand(s) is/are preferable. I have a small Mackie 1202 that i could concievabl...

Replacement Switch for Vintage Rat
it was amazing, i think i managed to break the switch on my Rat reissue during a performance. the switch had always been a bother (a real noisy kind of a guy even up until the day of his death). i stomped on it hard enough that the signal cut and my right thigh got sore. so now the question is what ...

Re: That Nick Drake Guitar Sound
yes, people tend to neglect this for some reason when talking about pink moon. it was a tiny bit more than just nick and his 6-string.One overdub- the piano solo on the title track.
i didn't think i was anal enough to make this post. maybe because it's such a special record.
