I am pretty sure I managed to get two usable mixes off of the tape. One had two short dropouts. We're talking milliseconds, just barely enough to hear, and then only through headphones (unless you know they are there). I'm hoping there might be a way to camoflague this one. The other has the cymbals...

Awright-- Just got off the phone with the guy from Quantegy. Talk about great customer support! The guy was very willing to work with me. It sounds like the whole thing is going to take a day or two to work out. I have old gear, and I'm such a frikkin' amateur. Both of these things add layers of con...

It has been 24 hours since I reported my difficulties with 456 to Quantegy. During this time, I have apparently lost yet another song to their defective tape. I have not heard word one from Quantegy about this. This really isn't funny. Does anyone have any idea what I can do to save an eighteen mont...

The scary thing here is that I have an awesome, priceless, irreplaceable multitrack recording on the front half of that reel. And no 8-track duplication equipment. It seems to have held up fine so far. But believe me, it sure feels like my ... butt ... is hanging out in the breeze right about now. I...

http://messageboard.tapeop.com/viewtopic.php?t=31028 Well, there you go. No, there I go.   I mean, seriously. I've got 30 year old reels of Scotch stock that's are more consistent. Guess it's time to contact the almighty Q. Although that hardly seems fair seeing as how my tape is...

Is anyone else out there having trouble with 456?
Hello. I'm just wondering if anyone else out there is having trouble with their Q-456. I've been working with a reel from mid-or-early 2004 and it's drop-out central. Deck has been cleaned repeatedly. I've been having alignment trouble with channel one, but I doubt it's an alignment issue. In fact, ...

Not to flog a dead horse here... and not to be talking out my hindey-end, either... but the DJ on one of those classic rock stations around here made a big deal about how the multitrack tape on "Rumors" were so whupped by the end of the recording sessions that there was no high end left at all. Some...

OK, it's getting weirder... I put a new reel of tape on the (still unaligned) deck to record with that, and went to town on it. All tracks work fine. In fact, the first 10 minutes of tape worked fine on the reel where I found the problem. What is going on here?!?! The tape was late-producti...

On the one hand, it doesn't seem as though it would be that hard. I've rebuilt a couple of 4-barrel carbs. I can make the right Thermo-Quad sing like a canary. It can't be much worse than that. But then on the other hand, my studio is all old stuff. All of it. The instruments. The mics. The effects....

one warning- Once the heads are aligned, the stuff you have recorded on it recently will be practically useless if the heads are as far out of whack as it sounds from your description. Yeah...that's what I was afraid of. Part of me wants to go on using it as a 7-track. The other part of me says not...

Time to align the tape deck. How do I do that?
OK, this may be the stoopidest question ever, and yes I admit my cluelessness, but I gotta align my tape deck . I can see half the head of track one sticking out past the edge of the tape when I look up under there. It's a Fostex Model 80. So... do I just find the adjuster screw and start cranking a...

The song "Sheep" by Pink Floyd is pretty creepy too. So is "One of These Days." And the King Crimson references are right on the money. How 'bout Genesis "Supper's Ready?" Back to Joy Division, though--ever notice how in the song "Isolation" it sounds as though there is a different effect applied to...
