Hmm... all this begs the question... who out there is modifying consumer-grade EQs to do something interesting? Seems like there might be some potential there.

'Round here all you can get is the ordinary isopropyl alcohol, and usually 70% at that. Just remember not to use rubbing alcohol on the pinch roller! I've used Formula 409 in the past.

Also, heads not being clean will not introduce hum or hiss. It'll just make everything sound murky, icky, quiet, and bad.

Hey, I've got a two-speed MX-5050 in the attic, waiting for refurb, and I've been wondering the same thing. You might be able to pre-emphasize the highs on the way to tape to offset the roll-off. I prefer to have highs available to dial out if need be, myself.

Yeah, that does not sound like the kind of EV635a I know and... like OK I guess.

If anything, it should sound kind of honky & muffled--although I overstate. On the recording I do have posted, it's most of what's catching the ride cymbal.
