did a session w. J Robbins a few years ago w/ 421s under the toms and those small akg clip-on condensers on the top. spent a lot of time getting the drums in tune, J worked his in-phase magic... the results were great. nice meaty tone from the 421s and a good, clear, musical-and-mixable attack from ...

I know Logic Pro offers all of these things, but I'm thinking that Logic Express plus NI Komplete and some third-party effect plug-ins might better suite my needs. Do the (natural) drum and guitar sounds in Logic compare favorably to those in NI? That would be a big selling point for me. Logic's ha...

after you've moved the kit around the room (and LORD is that fun!): besides de-tuning the lugs around the strainer, generally having your bottom snare head tighter will put the drum in a range that gets rid of a bunch of sympathetic vibrations. you can usu. make up the difference by lowering the top...

how far are your OH's from the ceiling? harsh, comb-filtered phasiness is often a product of nasty early reflections. cymbal/mic/pre choices can get you closer to the right end result, but if the room reflections are hurtin' you....

i record tabla a LOT. alot, alot, alot. provided the player has good technique, esp. left-hand technique, and the floor/room is bright, stereo SDC's will almost always work out fine. play around w/ X/Y and distance, and try not to get in the way of the players hands; some techniques call for you to ...

chances are that, even if it sounds great in the room... it's the room. if not, it's prob. the relationship of the other mics in the room. phase and resonance issues just straight-up kill your transients. try backing off the snare a bit and making sure that you're not clipping anywhere in the chain....

marc pretty much hit the nail on the head as regards indian harmoniums (or "vaja" in most north indian languages). the guy on 4th street is keshav das; check out his website, www.keshav-music.com. He has lots of good vaja in his shop, some scale changers, some not, none cheap-- but then again, none ...

couple things worth mentioning: #1, if you want to get a UAD card down the line, the new dualcore G5's don't support the regular PCI architecture. Apple's kept an older model of the G5 in the lineup, but it ain't exactly a deal. advantage, G4. #2, and it just blows me away everyday-- the dual g4's a...
