Seeing my EQ as a visual curve on a graph makes it too tempting to EQ with my eyes and not my ears. If I had a dime for every time I screwed up a mix this way... I'm so on your page, I think it's one of the most serious caveats to the DAW world: listening with your eyeballs. I have to turn my displ...

I'm going to recommend a very simple EQ with a fantastic tone. The Electrodyne 511. Damn! Yeah, that was the one I was leaning the most towards. I think you might put me over the edge. Those EQ points look very useful and very intuitive. I've been reading some glowing reviews of the Avedis, as well.

API 2623 sounds fun, I imagine that would pair well. And yeah, I'm not complaining about the Tamuras, I really, really dig em. I just figured since we'll have that many channels of the same pre it might be fun to impart a different flavor to a couple. Not necessarily better, but different. And I thi...

a parametric eq has a q function. A sweeping shelf ? eq like my trident has where you have a boost/cut and a sweep function is not a parametric eq because it does not have variable q range. Right, I guess what I'm saying is that I remember having control of the Q on the model I used, but I could be...

EQ: Is too much control dangerous?
[WARNING: Potentially obnoxious, philosophical gear musings to follow] I'm about to get another outboard EQ and I've been researching it like a madman. As I look at the dizzying array of options for the 500 series, I must admit to feeling a bit overwhelmed. In my search I came across this article th...

Transformer swap on PM1000?
Hey all! A friend of mine and I kinda pool our gear together and we went in on a total of six channels of Yamaha PM1000 that are currently being racked for us. I already have two of the channels racked and I just love the way they sound: the pre is very focused and the EQ is very pleasing (though no...

If you want cheap overheads I would definitely look at the MXL 603 mics (or whatever the current model number is, mine are several years old). They're pretty damn cool for the money and if you're at all handy with a soldering iron you can replace two capacitors in each mic and get a pretty substanti...

Pro audio tech in Portland, OR?
Anyone have a pro audio tech in Portland that they like? I need to find someone who can re-cap and mod all the crazy little old stuff I find and ideally someone who could rack up old console channel strips and do all that fun stuff i don't know how to do. I had been going to the Portland Custom Shop...

There's a new Seymour Duncan compressor called the "Double-Back" compressor, it gives you control over Attack and "Sustain" and it has a dry signal blend, almost like parallel compression for guitar. Still no Ratio or Threshold controls though. I haven't heard it but a friend whose opinions on such ...

As a musician, I find that very often if I'm at a studio with great instruments I'll be inspired by a really great guitar, a really cool bass, or some obscure keyboard and I'll play differently that I would have if I had used my own gear. Having good instruments that are fun to play at your disposal...

i guess my main question is, will getting the speck be a BIG improvement over the logic plugs? In my experience: most certainly. Outboard EQ (well, GOOD outboard EQ) sounds better than just about any plugin I've ever heard. I used to have an Ashly SC66 EQ that was very inexpensive and it was a vast...

If I could go back in time to like six years ago when I started taking recording kinda seriously and buying gear when I could, I would tell my past self this: "I know microphones and outboard gear are very important and very sexy, but for now put your money into room treatment and kickass instrument...
