Re: Logic is impossible
Give up. EMACS vs VI. Nobody wins. I'm a Cubase guy myself, but its whatever works for ya. Resultate ?ber allen. Yep. If ever there was a "to each their own" subject... this is it. Personally, Cubase confused the heck out of me, and I'm pretty happy with Logic - but much like vi and emacs, it's all...

Re: Who do you sing like?
I sound a lot like Thurl Ravenscroft. Really. Ask me for the Grinch song or a Tony the Tiger line sometime.
It's fun, but man, there's stuff that just doesn't sound right with that voice.

Re: Anyone having pop/click problems with linked Alesis ModF
Perhaps I'll try it again with simple patch cords, instead of that interface. It seems to me those connectors are the weak point of these otherwise cool units--I have them sitting on a tabletop, and every time I move them there is stress on the connection. Anyhow I'll report back with results... Go...

Re: Anyone having pop/click problems with linked Alesis ModF
I've got a Philtre and Bitrman--they're great! I had them linked using the 9-pin connection with the Philtre first and the Bitrman second, and a couple times a minute a loud pop would insert itself into the signal path, regardless of whether or not the units were bypassed. Each unit individually ma...

Re: recording really low voices
I wouldn't use it for everything, but on this louder song of mine, it seemed to do better than anything else I've ever tried. It's with louder songs where I was running into trouble - quiet stuff with more space wasn't so much of a problem. Low vocals turning into mud on louder songs was. :) I thin...

Re: recording really low voices
And the winning technique so far, now that I've had a saturday afternoon to try out options: position the mic a little off-axis, roll off the low end (literally, not like that signature), and then compress the snot out of it. Interestingly, since I was trying a bunch of compressor plugins, some work...

Re: Polyphonic Spree
I've recorded Polyphonic Spree live to two track in an attempt to top just about all I had done in my life up to that point. I felt like I was on some kind of drug the whole time from the adrenilin and it was one of the best experiences of my life. That band is just pure positive energy. All twenty...

Re: Polyphonic Spree
It's taking the wall of sound up a few notches, I think. It's also where to find about half the musicians in Dallas at any given time. :) There's a Polyphonic Spree record out, but see them live if you get a chance. The record sounds pretty good, but it doesn't quite convey the experience of thirty ...

Re: removing a pop/click from a piece of audio
Man, when I used to mixdown to my win98 laptop (using its crappy soundcard converters - eek), i used to get clicks all the time - zoom in on the waveform, and it'd look like the curves just sort of hiccupped and didn't connect in a spot. CoolEdit2000 showed it as a big red bar in the "harmonic" view...

Re: Buzzing coming through mixer from computer monitor
Speaking of guitar pickups.. this isn't likely to help if it's really coming in through your mixer, but electromagnetic fields being what they are, if you turn with a guitar, you can usually find an angle to stand at to minimize the hum from any nearby RF sources - like fluorescent lights, CRTs, etc...

Re: recording really low voices
Thanks for the advice and suggestions. I'm totally in "home studio" territory, although the bands I play in and friends' bands are starting to come over to record more stuff lately. My mics (so far) aren't the greatest, but are about what you might expect with that - AT 3035, couple of various oktav...

Re: Live Vocals question.. Singing thru guitar amp onstage?
Man, I don't want to say that dealing with bad/weird sound onstage is "that's life"... but even in places that I know consistently sound good out in the room, I've always found the sound onstage to be a lottery. Some nights it works, some nights it doesn't. One band I play in is a 5-piece with some ...

recording really low voices
Here's a subject I'm not finding in the archives: what seems to work best with recording a really low, boomy, bass-y voice? I've been trying a few things lately - different mics, high-pass filters and/or low EQ, and I'm getting OK results but not great. Basically, I'm getting tracks that wind up eit...

Re: Logic 5 Big Box and OSX
Tell your friend to try the download archive - http://www.emagic.de/support/download/archive.php?lang=EN I bought the big box originally, and had no problem on OSX (10.2 - I don't know about 10.0 or 10.1). You'll need the xskey USB hardware key and the temporary access codes from the box (and I seri...

Re: External Drives Necessary
I think a lot of people here are using external firewire drives, actually. I'm running Logic on a G4 personally, but I've gotten 24 tracks with plugins using a <$200 firewire drive. Look for drives with <10ms seek time and particularly (I'm told) the Oxford 911 controller chip (mine uses it and clai...
