Topic: Any cool gear stores in Philadelphia?

Too bad I'm probably too late. Philly is missing stores these days. Even at it's best, it never compared to NYC. In fact, we used to travel to NYC every so often just for the music stores. BTW, there are no real pro-gear places around. No rental houses that I know of either. I may be missing somethi...

It's a bullcrap "law" put into effect because there were too many jackasses abusing return policies. That is, they'd buy some mics, use them for sessions, and return them before the return deadline. Then, they'd do it again. If you have a relationship with any store, or if they know you're a serious...

I got very lucky. I bought an MC012 way back when from GC. A couple of years later I bought one used, without hearing it, because the price was great and I thought I'd mod them both or resell if the second oone sounded lousy. They both sound good and so close that any difference is negligable. This ...

Okay, here's what I'd say. If money is no object I'd say get the a Kinman for the bridge. Fralins ate great pickups but the Kinmans are right there and are noiseless. For less money, I'd recommend Bill Lawrence......OR.......from what you describe I'd say a DiMarzio Virtual Vintage, which you can fi...

I have an MBox that was only used by a little old lady in Pasadena on Sunday mornings. Seriously, it's barely used and you would not be able to tell it from new. The Pro Tools software has not even been opened (I used it with Tracktion 2) It's 6.7 and is upgradable to 7.0 for free. Make me an offer ...

I have an Epiphone Casino and it plays and sounds excellent. It is a true hollow body, unlike the Dot, which is semi hollow. Therefore, it is louder acoustically and is also more prone to feedback too. P-90s on the Casino sound nice but are just noisy as a loud SC would be I also have a Jay Turser J...

I have one and like it but am definitely going to do the hum mod - it;'s the one bad thing about the amp.....it's a tad noisy. The only things I have done is change the tube and use an extension cab. I saw where someone chopped the amp into a head. Looks cool if that's what you want, but it's so sma...

I can't really argue with Heylow's advice and I completely understand why people would recommend the preamp first. An SM57/58 through good preamp can certainly sound like you've never known your SM57/58 to sound. If you never knew why SM57's were a staple in just about every studio, you'll know. Sti...

The Burr Brown option is not astonishingly different but is definitely noticeable. I don't know I'd say warmer as much as darker. They are good for deaccentuating high end grit or eshiness, not that it will take it away. Some mics with some sources just fare better with those channels, some not so. ...

In general, I think it's best when money is spent so that the signal chain is comparable. That being said, I think mics are probably the link that will have the greatest effect. $800 is not an easy budget to work with for all things. So.......... I'd concentrate on mics. If the preamps in the preson...

Well, if there are dimmers, you'll have no choice but to replace them with really good and expensive dimmers or regular switches. Before doing that, see how much noise you have with the dimmers all the way up (on). If it's flourecent lighting, well...60 hz noise is a way of life with them. If you ha...
