setting up a tascam 58?
hiya chappies (and chappettes) been meaning to deal with this for ages, but too slack. anyone got advice of setting up (calibration / bias) a tascam 58 1/2" 8track unit? don't have an mri tape, but can create one by printing tones to tape from protools (?) - i know 1Khz and 10kHZ tones are required....

dave, i need to learn how to bias my tascam 58 and 32 machines. i am a very bad man. i have the users manual (not that useful), but until now have simply opted for periodic servicing and setting for gp9 / 499. would this be best as a new thread, or do you have somewhere you can direct me to for this...

acoustic guitar maybe - it'd be a very particular sound with no breething space. amp room - bewdiful. but . . . storage room for all the stuff you don't want cluttering up the recording space? now that's thinking there, son. spare mic stands, maybe even racks for mic cases, tape reels, drum hardware...

i concur with fletch (like, der), and expand upon . . . mic over the shoulder of the musician, with muso in centre of the room (to minimise bass loading) is the quickest ploy, but you may not get the best possible. listen in the room. what sound are you wanting to represent? what part of the sound a...

see what you think. try slinging some tone onto it at difference levels, and see if you like how it reacts. you know - 1khz at unity, +3, +6, +9 - how does it break up? introduces good or bad overtones? (sorry - retuning drums - i mean harmonics) using a new tape formulation for the first time in a ...

scratch and sniff. i mean, gp9 is the same as 499 (both a higher level tape than 456) so you hitting tape hard on a machine set for 456 should at least give you a feel for the compound. i don't like gp9 as much as 499 - it flips into distortion rather than sliding gracefully, and i think the tape di...

well i now have the stock 46 and the 46cinemag haven't had a chance to use in session yet, but the 46C certainly appears to have less proximity effet and more top end. i'll probably keep using the stock 46 on bright acoustic guitars, bright amps and as drum overheads (as well as bitey female vocals)...

i've been running 8 out off protools into my 8 bus console they start off going to the tape return busses, but some channels i'll mult and sling into a channel path to strap on some tasty thing or other i'll return that channel either to the clean bus (summing the signals before the stereo out) or i...

hi, my name is chris and i'm addicted to compression. it became really bad when i built some 1176 clones and opto clones - i had to dabble a sprinkle of their sweet sweet sugar on everything. i got an 8track tape, so i could have softer more 'natural' compression. i got ribbon microphones, enjoying ...
