tips needed for realistic percussion grooves w/ sampling
OK, this is a pretty broad topic but one that I think everyone might benefit from. I'm wondering if there are any tips and tricks out there for creating interesting looped grooves in a sampler, a la Underworld, Boards of Canada - basically artists that don't use run of the mill sampled drum kits but...

Re: Analog 8 tracks: which has the best bang for the buck?!
I have a 38 that I use to track guitar parts and bass. It was a bit difficult at first to get decent sound out of it but mainly because I had grown accustomed to how easy it is to get good clean signal from digital. Now I compress everything to tape, that seems to do the trick. I've been recycling t...

Re: old/cheap/analog reverb
For that money the best verb you can get is a free plugin, if you're running a DAW. No, I don't believe you can use your synth unless it has audio in which is easy enough to check.
Otherwise, just search ebay for reverb and see what comes up for your price.

Looking for drummer + cellist/violinist duo with own studio
I'm looking for a good drummer as well as a cellist/violinist for orchestration, who can record in their own studio, parts that I have written, for my tracks. I have finished songs that just need real parts (the aforementioned) recorded. Album credit will be given as well as a small amount of pay wh...

Re: Walter Sear makes me cry
I also was a little riled by the Walter Sear article, although I respect this guy's perspective because of who he is, and ultimately thought what he had to say is right on. But after I read it, I just was like, god I suck. Even though I actually studied audio engineering at a top broadcasting univer...

Check out The Lexicon LXP-1, and older half-rack model from the 80s. People rave about it..

routing question invonving analog 8 track
Hi there I have a Tascam 38 reel to reel that I use to track guitar and bass to, hooked up to a small mackie 1202 VLZ, which then gets routed to my MOTU 828 for overdubs and more tracking on projects. My problem is that the deck is RCA ins and outs, 8 each. The outs are all wired to the Mackie, but ...

Re: Digital recording, analog mixdown, then back to digital.
I'm sure there's different philosophies on this, but my experience has been that it's better to track certian things to analog before going into the digital domain. I use a Tascam 38 for this, as usually my songs are driven by bass and guitar which sound nice when sent to it via a tube pre and compr...

Recording cello and violin for alt-rock/breakbeat track
Greetings fello TapeOppers I'm working on finishing up my demo in home studio, working with tracks that have some sampled parts that I am replacing with live instruments. I've got a strings part that I'm having scored by someone who does such things. Next step will be to bring live players in and re...

Re: OT: Elliott Smith has died...
Fuck what a shock. I had to take off to the record store at lunch today and lo and behold there was 1 more 7" left of Pretty (Ugly Before). I guess it'll be a collectors item now.
Elliot, wherever you are, holy shit asshole. I'll miss you

Re: Suggestions on home recording software. . .
Here's my .02 If you are completely new to the concept of the DAW and you want to get some songs recorded this year, go with something far less comprehensive then Logic. Save that for a couple of years down the road when you are ready to expand your horizons. Instead, get something like Bias Deck, o...

Re: Advice needed for DIY recording of Cello and Violins
Thanks for the good insight. I dislike citing 'influences' because there are far too many to list. Some artists whom I have respect for what they do musically, (although I would never try to go down thier path) are: Matmos, Squarepusher, Low, Dirty Three, Boards of Canada, The Beatles, Phil Spector,...

Advice needed for DIY recording of Cello and Violins
I am a home recordist who has a bunch of material half finished. What I'm looking to do is get some real musicians involved in finishing up my mostlty electronic oriented tracks. I have many sampled parts of orchestral sounds, for instance, and would like to replace them with real players. I live in...
