Alternative to Ampex 601 as a pre?
I own an Ampex 601 which I use as a mic pre. I also use a UA 610. I love the sound of the Ampex 601, but it is a bit noisy so I can't use it much on quieter songs. The 610 seems a bit lame and tame compared to the Ampex. Anybody have any recommendations for a pre that captures the vintage feel and a...

Ideas for 60s sounding console?
I'm thinking of getting a new console and wanted to see if anyone had ideas on a good sounding one in the 5K range. Right now I'm using a Studiomaster Mixdown Classic. It seems fine, but I'd like something I can be a bit more confident in the mic pres and eq with. The thing is that I record and mix ...

Thanks, I'll check out prosoundweb. The plate isn't an EMT. It's something called a Blue Plate Special, which I've never heard of. The guy I bought it from was using a BGW amp to drive it. I have some spare home stereo amps, but I was thinking of using a tube hi fi amp from the 60s to drive it. But ...

Alternative to emt V54 (amp for plate reverb)?
I picked up a plate reverb (Blue Plate Special?) and want to pair it with a tube amp to drive it. Anyone know what would be a good amp to use? Not sure how close I'll come, but to make it in the EMT 140 ballpark would be great.

I have to say, stubenbaines, that the New Rags have the heaviest Rhodes sound I've heard. It's so heavy I just ordered their EP. Well done sir. Thanks! I had fun recording them. The Rhodes was going through a Music Man tube amp and a Silverface Champ. I used a Blueberry as the room mic and recorded...

I think the Rhodes sounds best when run out through an amp. I was trying to avoid the clean bell like sound of the Rhodes so we wanted the amp to provide some edge. I used a Y cable and split the output to 2 amps. One was dirty and one was cleaner to try to capture all overtones of the instrument. F...

Recommendations for acoustic designers/contractors in NYC/NJ
Anyone here in the NYC/NJ area have any recommendations for good contractors (and designers) who can handle studio construction? I'm remodeling my home studio and I'd like to find a contractor who has some experience working with music rooms.
Thanks,
Dennis

Compressor repair in NYC?
Anyone have a recommendation on a guy or place I can take an Orban compressor to get checked over? I've had music stores work on my guitar amps, but don't know of anyone who does studio gear troubleshooting/repair.
Thanks

I wish there was more discussion of Black Sabbath's recording techniques too. I mean how many more times do we need to hear the story of the drum sound on When The Levee Breaks. I like how the band has some radically different sounds in their career, probably from ditching Rodger Bain as producer. T...

Yeah, I know digital reverb sucks, but at the same time, I don't have an empty swimming pool or septic tank to use as a chamber. I've tried reamping and I can get a decent small room reverb, but nothing larger since I'm doing this in my house. So I was looking for something larger. Something like on...

That's good to see someone's making new plate reverbs. I like the looks of what they're doing. Although it seems like their plates still need some tweaking with no dampening or enclosures. Oh one other thing for the reverb - no plugins or software based reverbs. It needs to be an external box, since...

Good "natural" digital reverb (mid-priced)?
I own an Orban spring which I love to use on vocals since I enjoy going for 50s-60s recording sound. But for longer decays and instruments it's not so great. I figure I'm not likely to come across an EMT plate, and I don't have an echo chamber or huge room, so what would all recommend for a good dig...
