I think someone told me many years ago "oh, you should use playlists" and I was like "nah, I'm good. this works for me". But then I tried it and NEVER went back. I was an idiot. It saves so much time once you get the hang of it.

For Pro Tools playlists you don't have to cut and paste. you simply highlight an area and then click a little "up" arrow and it moves it to the main track for you. It's true, "playlists" are just files, so pretty much every file is a "playlist" or at least Avid(or Digidesign) has been using that term forever I think
