I love my modded/recapped Yamaha PM1000 mic preamps. I also love the Avalon M5 mic amp. What the hell, there's a lot of preamps I love. 1272's, API's, 1081's, you name it. There aren't very many IC preamps I love, but there are a few good ones out there.

When I'm going to analog, my Alesis SR-16 works great. When I'm recording to protools, I usually do it to the grid in PT, as it makes editing much easier.

I would back off the compression/limiting going on. You can hear the whole mix pumping and sucking which is squashing the life out of it I think. If it's possible to dial that back a good bit, I think it would help a lot.

I don't really see the Roy Orbison in this, except maybe in that end chord progression.

That said, I really like it and think it sounds cool. It's a good song, and like how it's arranged and mixed.

I think the music is cool. I just wish the singing were a little better. He sounds a little unsure of himself, like maybe he's a really good singer, but he wasn't able to take it to the next level during recording. It's something that happens to a lot of decent singers when they get in the recording...

My first thought was Cake too. Sounds nice though! I actually don't mind the vocals being that loud. I'm a loud vocal type engineer though. Though I will say, that putting the vocals that loud emphasizes timing issues in the vocals, which there were a few of. Cool stuff though, keep it up. It sounds...
