Re: Digital Performer
You can only run VST effects and instruments with a 'wrapper' plugin -- a MAS format plugin that loads the VST plug. I use VSTWrapper from AudioEase: http://www.audioease.com/Pages/wrapper/wrapperMain.html Some plugs work much better than other, unfortunately. Try the demo to see if your favorites r...

Re: computer based recording w/ cool edit pro
There are a zillion of them!
My bandmate uses the M Audio OmniStudio -- it's got 2 mic inputs, 4 line inputs, headphone amp, effects loop, SPDIF, C-3PO, smart bomb, etc. It's a fine front end to Cool Edit if you can get by with 4 or so simultaneous inputs.

Re: Rock defeated communism.....
When the communist government in Czech was overthrown, the city of Treplice needed an interim governor. They chose Miroslav Wanek, guitarist/vocalist from the band Uz Jsme Doma: http://www.uzjsmedoma.com/ (asskicking playwright Vaclav Havel was president of the country back then, too) When rock is o...

Re: What are you using for drum sequencing?
What is DP3 missing in the drum editor? Sorry, I missed this question for a couple of days. DP3's drum editor is missing the ability to easily draw in triplets with the pencil. I think you can quantize to triplets when recording in real time, but I like to enter patterns in the editor. I am on the ...

Re: What are you using for drum sequencing?
I'm thrashing around painfully trying to decide how to do this. I would be happy using DP3 for sequencing and Reason for sample playback if DP3 had a better drum editor. I recently inherited an obsolete Windows laptop -- 700mHz. Does anybody know a really good samping drum machine for Windows? I nee...

Re: Never hire a moving company
Hmm, maybe "never cut corners on hiring a moving company?" I have moved cross-country and used movers a couple of times. By far the best way to do it is to use a local agent for one of the bigger companies. When my wife and I moved back in July, we had a signed contract that specified the maximum am...

Re: allen and heath mix wizard?
It is a cheap way to get 16 mic preamps but I think you will quickly wish you had other channels to choose from. I started out with a 16:2 DX and eventually sold it and got a smaller board with better EQ and found various other input channels to round that out. In your position I would get a 4 or 8 ...

Re: Is there really that much difference between 20 and 24 b
Kelly, I bet you are hearing better converters, not longer word length. Nathan, don't be afraid of the 20 bit machine just because it's 20 bit. Be sure you understand how things will work with your computer and software -- can you process internally at 24 or 32 bits and play back through the Layla? ...

Re: Cheapest way to send a CD?
What has worked best for me, hands down, has been to do a lot of CD shopping online at places like Djangos that send their stuff out in reusable packaging. It's been awhile since I ordered from them but they used to send everything out in these great cardboard boxes. You just turn them inside out an...

Re: Govenator vs. The Body
It seems that at least Mr. Ventura came to office with a specific set of ideas/programs that he had some kinda hand in developing, and he didn't seem too shy about appearing in front of people and actually discussing them. If you think pissing away a gigantic budget surplus, demonizing single mothe...

Re: bass drum/guitar mic info please
I have gotten great kick and guitar sounds from a 421. Also great air organ, cello, and electric bass sounds. It's a really good mic to have around and not hard to find for US$200 used.

Somebody studied cigarette ads and concluded that they influence brand selection but not the decision to smoke or not.

Re: Cool Edit Pro 2, 24 Bit Recording, Is It Possible??
If you are mixing/processing the audio before sending it back to the 8 track, you should definitely use 32 bit. Any summing, processing, gain changes, etc. will sound better at the higher word length. The only time I had trouble with CEP's 32 bit format was when I needed to move track files to a Mac...

Re: good sounding DAW for under $400?
Unless someone recorded with more than one interface during the same session I think it would be very damned hard to compare the 'sound' of an interface fairly. In the under-a-grand range I don't think you need to agonize over whether one interface sounds 'colder' than another -- they will all resem...

Re: Allen & Heath MixWizards ... anything special?
I have owned a 16:2 DX and they are pretty common in clubs. They are great for small rooms where you need to wedge your sound person into a tiny space. The only compact boards I can really compare it to are the Mackie 1604, the Alesis Studio 32, and one of the compact Behringers (2882 or something) ...
