remember those recordings of your first band, made on you ratty old pioneer tapedeck with two karioke mics? every time you finished recording, how you ran that tape backwards and forwards till it fell apart, trying to figure out how you could have made it better, and then doing so on your next "ses...

I just got the SansAmp Classic a month ago and wouldn't trade it for the world. I had been using a Countryman for a few years, but the SansAmp is a different animal all together. It manages to give my Jazz Bass Special (combo of Jazz and P Bass pickups) just enough Ampeg sound without losing the rou...

Re: e
Ah, I see. yeah, fixing the phase would have been easy to do and it would have helped that snare pop out a little more. It's kind of wierd that he got phase, though, since he used a mono dynamic overhead and didn't mic the bottom head of the snare. I mean I guess it could happen. It might be that "...

Re: s
huh, is there some phase going on btwn the overhead and the snare? The snare seems to thin out now and then. Overall, not bad for a quick recording. Really some creative equing would have improved everything, too. That kick sounds like crap. What's funny is that I threw a 57 on a kick the other nig...

I think part of the sound of the kick has to do with Ethan playing the drums on most of those songs. As he says in the article, there was a lot of bleed due to the fact that it was literally both Ryan and Ethan sitting in the studio knocking out a tune a day. Also, as a producer/engineer, he probabl...

Who paid to have the album made? Did the band sign anything? If the label paid, they own that recording. They can shelve it if they want to. Does the band have a manager? It is really the manager's job to deal with this and give you guidance. To actually add some advice instead of just ask questions...

I think some of you missed the point of what the OPs teacher was saying. He obviously understands the value of top shelf gear, he was simply saying that his understanding of music mixed with engineering certainly allowed him to make quality recordings even with limited means. I think we all agree th...

Yeah, Grimm, you need a new guy. That's for a one time total once over. That includes pulling all the electronics, testing them, cranking the neck properly (you are only supposed to crank the neck so much a day), etc...this guy is a luthier and when you bring it in and say "totally set this up", it...

It helps tremendously to have the bass "set up" by someone who knows what they are doing. I don't (beyond quick intonation fixes, on the fly stuff) know how to crank the neck, optimize string action, etc... I am not talking a Guitar Center quick fix, I am talking a luthier or experienced guitar tech...

Frequency of a given instrument?
Can anyone provide a link to, or create a table of the frequency ranges of the common rock instruments? I am speaking of bass guitar, electric guitar, drums (snare, bass, two toms, floor tome), most vocals, etc... I think it would be an amazing tool for those of us who understand the idea of stackin...
