Input Problems with 003!!!!!
Help. I can't get signals from inputs 3 and 4 of the 003 into my Mac Book Pro. I can get signals through 1 and 2, and 5-8, and the lightpipe signals seem to work fine. For some reason, though, I can only get preamps 1 and 2 to send signals into my Pro Tools via firewire. Is there a setting that may ...

Mutt Lange
I just read the article about Terry Manning, and he mentioned that Mutt Lange recorded Back in Black in his Compass Point Studio. I've always admired the "Marshall" guitar sounds Lange is able to capture from artists -- most notably AC/DC's Highway to Hell and Back in Black, and Def Leppard's High a...

Can I trigger Wave Drum samples with my MIDI Drum KAT dk10?
I bought a CD loaded with good wave audio recordings of different recorded drums. I would love to be able to trigger them with my MIDI drumKAT dk10, but I am a retard when it comes to understanding MIDI's possibilities and limitations. Is it possible to create a bank of wave file sounds that my MIDI...

Using Inserts
I have a PreSonus Digimax LT, and I noticed 8 channel inserts in the back. Can someone help me understand how I can use them? The Digimax has ADAT Lightpipe out, so I figured that I could use analog outboard gear in the inserts section. I have a 4-channel Aphex Easyrider compressor, and I was hoping...

Using Gates
Thanks for the advice. You have provided many helpful tips. I think I'll gate the toms and the bass drum -- and maybe the snare. I'll try placing the guitar mics on surfaces separate from the bass cab as well. Mic placement and listening wil be key. Thanks again.

Ross Hogarth Interview
I truly appreciated the interview with Ross Hogarth. I'm a huge fan of Burne Hogarth's drawing techniques, and now I can understand why Ross is so talented himself. I would love to work with and learn more from Ross and a thousand other musicians / engineers featured in your magazine; TapeOp does a ...

Why use a gate?
I recently bought a US Audio 4 channel gate with the hope of being able to control the high hat that tends to bleed into other mics when recording drums. However, I'm a novice with bells and whistles such as gates, so I was wondering how I can most effectively use this in my chain. I run all sorts o...

Ribbon Microphones
I just purchased a ribbon microphone because in Tapeop I've read the testimonials of those who prefer them, but I'm not sure of their strength and their fragility. How do you pros out there use them, and what is the best way to care for them to ensure lasting effective use? Any advice would be helpf...

Digital "Fuzz" Pops
:( Help, I heard little digital crackles after I transferred 8 drum tracks from a Fostex VF-160 to Cakewalk 9 in my PC via ADAT Optical ports. Both machines were clocked to 16 bit 44.1 khz. Any advice on how to troubleshoot this beeyotch would be greatly appreciated. My PC uses a Terratec dmx 6fire ...

Cakewalk Problem: Arming Tracks
 I am baffled because Cakewalk 9.0 has recently decided that it would only allow me to arm and record a track once. After one take the track no longer recognizes an incoming signal. I've tried disarming and then re-arming the track, but to no avail. Now I must exit the program and reopen it an...

Help!!!Digital pops and crackles through Lightpipe.
 Can anyone out there in recording land offer advice on how to eliminate the snaps, crackles and pops that I'm hearing behind the signals I transfer through ADAT Lightpipe? I use a Fostex VF-160 going into a Terratec dmx 6fire in my PC. I'm pretty sure that the noise is within the computer, so...

How do I transfer 8 tracks via ADAT optical?
:( Help! I am pissed. I have a Fostex VF-160 with ADAT Optical, and my computer recently received a dmx 6fire with ADAT Optical. I cannot transfer tracks from the Fostex to the other. What do I need? Do I need specialized software. I use Cakewalk 9.0 to multitrack in Windows 2000, and it recognizes ...

What the fuck causes Dropouts?
 Hi. I've been fighting DROPOUTS in Cakewalk 9.0 for over a year now. Before you respond, let me tell you what I know about them. 1. I know buffer size can remedy or worsen the problem. I've found that tweaking it is a pain in the ass. 2. It usually occurs when one of the following happens: a....

Re: Cakewalk Pro Audio + plugins
Hi Steve, I use Pro Audio 9.0, and I installed TC Native Essentials, a Direct X Plug In, to use with my Cakewalk and Sound Forge programs. TC Native Essentials is EQ, Compression, Reverb and Filter Effects, and it sounds damn good. All I did was install it, and I was walked through the process in wh...

Alto CLE 4.0? Any good?
I am on a budget, and i was wondering if anybody had any experience with the Alto CLE 4.0 compressor. I'd like 4 channels of compression for my mobile recording rig, but $500 for a dbx 1046 seems a bit out of my league. Does anybody have an opinion on Alto gear? The price is good, but I think it mus...
