First thing I would do is to see if the problem is hardware or software. If you have a relatively recent OS installed, you should be able to boot into a recovery partition. Press CMD+R right after you hear the startup chime to boot into Recovery mode. If that doesn't work, you can try booting from a...

What do you think the greatest drawbacks of thunderbolt incompatibility would be? Hard to say. You might find you get by without Thunderbolt just fine. There are certainly plenty of USB interfaces, and as long as you get a decent USB3 card for high-speed external disks, you might not miss Thunderbo...

Thanks, guys! There is some great advice here. What I anticipate doing is buying a refurbished, newest last generation Westmere style Mac Pro. I'll then install additional RAM and solid state system/storage drives myself. It seems to me that going with that approach would get the most bang for the ...

Couple of thoughts from a long-time Mac user. The current Apple lineup kind of sucks. There's no ideal solution for pro audio users. Everything is one compromise or another. Prior to it being discontinued, I would have said without hesitation that the old Mac Pro tower (aka "Cheese Grater") was the ...

Its helpful to suggest I write off the plugin entirely, why didn't I think of that? I'm sorry I missed the detail about PT 11, but you know, I took time out of my day to attempt to help you out. Not using a broken plugin is a valid option. It's not like there aren't a hundred other EQs you c...

Since you say that the problem exists whether you're using the Lightbridge or built-in audio, here's what I'd try. Clone your 10.8 disk to another drive, boot from the clone, then upgrade the clone to 10.10 and see if the problem goes away when using built-in audio. If it doesn't, then at least you ...

Thanks for the info. I was under the impression (possibly misinformed) that analog hardware should have zero latency. It's digital boxes that you must account for with the manual offset. In any case, I'll send a tone out to the hardware to check this for sure. The latency comes from the D/A convers...

I'm not much of a channel strip guy, to be honest. I usually rely on FabFilter gate/eq/comp to do the heavy lifting. But... Recently, I've been having a blast playing with Boz Labs +10db. It's not a Swiss-Army-knife do-everything channel strip, but what it does, it does really, really well. The EQ b...

The Slate Digital stuff sounds great but not always the most stable and they are pretty slow to get fixes out (since new products and features always seem to be higher priority). Ha, yeah, given that it's now 17 months after PT 11's release, and we still don't have compatible versions of most of th...

I wouldn't try to run high track count, high sample rate sessions on this, but for your average sized 44.1/48 session it should be fine. I might have spoken too soon about this. It looks like this little Mac might be able to handle the higher sample rates, too. I took a 48K/24-bit session and conve...

Everything arrived today. Here are my initial thoughts: - Upgrading the RAM is dead simple. Minis are designed with that in mind. - Adding the 2nd hard drive is daunting, and I have a fair amount of experience building PCs. You basically have to take the whole Mini apart. Set aside some time, be car...

I was waiting for a Mac Mini update, too. Then I read that the next-gen Broadwell chips from Intel got pushed back to at least Q4 2014, maybe into 2015. Given that the next major update to the Mac Minis are likely to come from that chip family, I decided to order now. Even if there is an update soon...
