Re: Best vocal mic under 2K?
Definitely. I’ve got a M71 with a 692 body, and I love how the low end stays in check even if you’re a few inches from the mic. And the m70 sdc cap is pretty sweet on acoustic guitar, too. I'm hungry for a pair of M70 caps for my Gefell bodies. I have a KM84 but at this point getting a second one i...

Re: Best vocal mic under 2K?
Microtech Gefell UM70 (multi-pattern M7) or M71 (cardioid-only M7) on either the 691 or 692 preamp body. I own both capsules and both preamp bodies. They are incredible mics for a wide range of instruments, but I feel like they really are wonderful as vocal mics. I also love an SM7b and recently pic...

Re: How many guitar amps?
I've been into collecting vintage amps for a while now, and I'm fortunate enough to have managed to snag some great deals over the past 15 years. 1955 Fender 5D6-A Bassman (all original transformers, non-original speakers) 1950s Magnasync Moviola Squawk Box (obviously modified) 1964 Silvertone 1482 ...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
Drawmer 1970 and a Strymon Volante. I'm currently wiring up the 1970 to my patch bays as a mic pre and as a set of compressors. This thing is like a swiss army knife and I can't wait to integrate it into my work flow. Planning on using it for tracking and as a mix bus comp post D-Box summing. The St...

Re: List your Bandcamp page
WOW! I haven't been around here for years, and I'm back as of today. Just saw that this thread that I started back in 2009 is still going. That makes me very happy. Some newer projects of my own: Mesmeric Haze, The Spacement Tapes Volume 1 (I played guitar, full band recorded completely live with voc...

I used to live in Asheville. Went to college for music and recording at UNCA, actually. Love that town. How's the scene been? Been digging Floating Action a bunch. Friends here in Philly in some bigger and smaller bands always end up down there for gigs, studios, etc. Seems like everyone who I know ...

I've been a pretty big fan of the Brent Averil rack/lunchbox. 6 spaces, however the power supply is solid and can power 2 of the racks. Also, when I need to do location recording, my stuff is protected in whatever hard case rack I load them into, unlike a lunchbox that can't be mounted into a hard c...

http://northernarms.bandcamp.com/album/northern-arms Debut record from my band, Northern Arms. I co-engineered "Warm Springs Georgia," "Build My Gallows," "Last Horse," and "Flesh of Arms." Basically, everything except for drums and bass, which were done last August (live, with the band in a house ...

I picked up a mid 80's rack mount Chandler Tube Driver. It has the original tube, and it's still kicking away without excess noise. It's awesome beyond words. I used it for a cello part the other day and it was killer. You can adjust the bias to make things really resonant or subdue it. Super nice ...

I've been using a bunch of modified Nady RSM-4 ribbons (I own 3) on guitar amps for the past 2 years, and I'm starting to really really love them. 90% of the guitars and all of the lap steel on the last Creepoid record were done with a combination of the RSM-4 and SM57, SM7b, or 421, variety of amps...

Really proud to have been involved in the making of this record as both an engineer (along with Jeff Zeigler [Kurt Vile, The War on Drugs], Brian D. McTear [Sharon Van Etten], and Mike Kennedy [local wunderkind, killer drummer, Emmy Award-winning mix engineer for NFL films]). I played lap steel and ...
