What kind of tape were you using in your Otari? Aside from wondering about how 7.5 ips will sound, I've also been thinking about trying a new tape formulation. So far I've used Quantegy 456, RMGi 911 and ATR tape (which is technically too high-print for Otari, but it came out okay -- clean and dark,...

Re: the low end -- did you do anything different in the way of setup, mic'ing, EQ'ing? Somewhere else on the forum someone with a 388 mentioned that they had to high-pass the bass, for example. I also remember reading about the Daptone dude rolling off the low end on his drum mics to even out the ba...

Recording at 7.5 ips w/ Otari 1/2" 8-track ?
Recording with an Otari at its "alternate" speed.. Haven't tried it out yet, figured I'd check out the TOMB first. Surprisingly, couldn't find any posts. Anyone have experience/sample tracks/2 cents? A few reasons why I'm interested in this: - I want to do some demos that have a different sound qual...

"Splitting the difference" during recording/mixing
A few years back I worked with a cheerful engineer who would tend to say "let's split the difference!" during any dilemma we encountered during recording and mixing. Nowadays I find myself hearing him in the back of my head. "Hey there! Just split the difference, buddy!" For example: I like the way ...

The Plateau of Gorgoroth
The Plateau of Gorgoroth was a high desolate plain in northwestern Mordor enclosed by the Ephel Duath on the west and the Ered Lithui on the north. The only known passages into the plateau through these mountain walls were the Isenmouthe (from Ud?n and the Morannon), Cirith Ungol, and the Morgul Val...

The time difference is a lot more drastic in the DI vs. mic senario. It takes and lot longer for a speaker to make sound and mic to pick it up and change it back to voltage that a DI to simply transfer some voltage. I would sugest you try to simplyfy the recording process to narrow down the problem...

Is it latency from digital effects in your pedalboard that's causing the delay? Are you recording to digital, and if so couldn't you just nudge the delayed track back into place? Nah, it's strictly analog pedals, recorded to tape. Yeah, when I mix the thing, I guess I'll go to computer and see if a...

how many "miles" of cabling are you talking about? my understanding of this isn't that great but i think you would really need to be talking about literally miles of cable for there to be an audible delay between the amps. is what you're hearing maybe a phase issue between the amps? Well, the diffe...

I'm weighing in late on this thread, but how can I RESIST -- I'm a big lover of cheesy, crappy-ass music. The following is a short list of loves, keep in mind that I'm simultaneously a big metalhead: -Christina & Britney: Britney can be fun ("Lucky" is great) but Christina wins hands down. Love her ...

Guitar --> A/B/Y box--> Amps... Delay a problem?
I remember this issue was talked about a bit in the letters section of a Tape Op back issue, but I just wanted to see if anyone has any additional input here (but let me know if this has already been heavily discussed on the TOMB somewhere).. I'm splitting a guitar signal and sending output A throug...

I'm recalling the liner notes from the "Mr. Guitar" Link Wray collection -- I'm pretty sure a good portion of Link Wray's stuff was recorded at their 3-track home studio even in the early 60's, before he moved to the "shack." I don't know if it was the same 3-track, but I was always curious what the...

i forgot to suggest, you should send a copy to tape op, don't be shy they might like it and they are vinyl lovers to bootZ Boyle wrote:i'm no expert, but getting the music reviewed by a bunch of sources seems like a key part in the process
