"Kelly, how would I check the version? " There isnt a simple way to check it. Units after 2006 will have the custom Vintech transformers instead of Carnhills (though they may have been puting them in earlier than this), units sold in the last couple years also have the electronics modification, but ...

Look for a Fernandes APG-100. The neck however is maple which is not historically accurate. The maple cap on the guitar is not a vernier, its actually a rather good chunk of maple, which you really dont see on 400 dollar gtrs.

Make sure to check what version the Vintechs are. There was some pretty significant changes to them years back in which there was a transformer change and circuit modification. I have a current model X73i and it is brighter/more forward sounding than the older Vintechs I have used. Five Fish Audio m...

Beyerdynamic Mics. For hiphop work and higher pitched male vox I've had good luck with Beyerdynamic MC840s. They're clean and not hyped on the top end (extremely smooth top) and are depthy sounding. For some singing styles it doest work though (think crooner). They're also very good OH mics. Beyerdy...

It would not surprise me if you could find some cool Russian or Chinese compressors used for propaganda or radio/news.

What I would do is check in with a local recording studio and just ask them where you might find some original chinese audio equipment.

I pulled a TEAC machine out of a closet that was essentially a time capsule.

There was a reel still in it's original package. It was Quantegy 456.

Does anybody have any general modus operandi concerning placement of a compressor and a chorus in the same chain? The way I *personaly* do things is compressor (a limiter in my case) after chorus - esp on an aux. Pretty much what Aitik does. It evens out the chorus ands makes it smoother/creamy. Th...

I knew an engineer who was pretty much deaf in one ear.

I still want to be as good as him.

If the compressor has a peak/rms switch and I'm working on drums, I'll switch it to peak.

More snap.

I'd look for a Clavia Nord Lead or a JP8K series.

The Nord Lead will be with you for a long time. Extremely rich sound.

They are nice, very "Hi-Fi" sounding with a lot of front to back imaging.... but as far as mixing on them, I havent really used them in a "Pro" sittuation. The biggest problem with them is that they have a slightly hyped metalicy high end.

4050/4040 are fantastic all rounders. They can sound muddy on electric guitars, but for everything else.... they sound good, excelent, or workable, but never terrible.

They also have a very smooth hi-end on vocals.

4047 works well on hi-gain modern nu-metal/alternative guitars, and female vocals.
