Ok, so I'm too lazy to read all these, but has anyone mentioned Smog's knock knock? - killer, perfectly natural, it-wouldn't-ever-occur-to-you-to-question-them handclaps.
Gotta love Smog.

I'll second Tony's suggestion - I work this way frequently, and the improv factor really makes it sound 'real'. I usually atart with a set guitar/vocal thing, get a take I like, and then improv the rest. I often go back later and redo those original tracks, too, to make them work with what I've adde...

When I play keys with a band, I always just use a keyboard - we're pretty tone-oriented, but we don't think twice about this live. No one can really tell the difference, and the convenience is well worth it. And at home, well, I'd rather spend my money on recording gear or at least instruments that ...

only balanced in +4 I believe (button out).
True, though it's never been an issue for me - all my balanced gear is +4.

I'm way too scared to do such a thing, though I use flaky vintage keys onstage all the time. I did just see a kinda big-time band last weekend, and was shocked to see them using laptops for keys (they were a rock band, not electronic-oriented at all). They had two m-audio controllers (88 key, I thi...

I totally agree with 8th note - I've been running a 1010 for maybe 6 years w/ no problems. It sounds great and works simply, and it's cheap. I think the breakout box is definitely worth it - you can essentially treat it like a tape machine and just patch in all your analog stuff. You can also use mo...

I use my MPC these days as a mega expensive controller. I like it.
A very talented friend says those things radically improved his drum programming.

I loved the movie and the bonus doc, too. I'm a Herzog fan, but don't know Thompson's stuff, really. It blew me away, and the recording is awesome, too. I loved the improv element.
Great New Yorker article on Herzog, too.

You can get silvertones in tube or solid state models; tube is generally preferable to most folks.
They don't tend to have many features, though - you might want something with some effects for versatility, like reverb, tremelo, etc.

There's actually a biodiesel/music recording connection here in atlanta - the guy who owns zero return sells the stuff. Pretty crazy, huh?

I like my deluxe, and also use an old silvertone. These are great, and can still sometimes be found cheap.
Small amps are killer for recording.
