So, maybe I'm misunderstanding, but can't you just either A) Record the two guitar parts separately, with different micing, or B) adjust levels of room mic vs. close mic in the mix?

To reiterate the two best bits of advice so far: First, Realizing that individual sounds should be tailored to the mix, and not treated solo, was a huge "AHA" moment for me. The first time I went in a pro studio and the engineer soloed a guitar track (that I had recorded to sound great by itself) an...

Assuming you have some sequencing software and a midi interface, you can also just draw in midi data to the program and have it 'play' the sampler. Be advised, though: The S900 is super old-school, and has pretty limited capabilities compared to what you can do with software these days. It is a wide...

I totally agree with kdarr. Both types are awesome, and they're totally different. You'd be best off with both, of course, but barring that it's just a matter of taste. I say find a vox, try it out, no matter what. Don't buy one unless you really know. I think, ultimately, a fender's more versatile....

Are the sounds you're getting in the first place 'big' enough? I can't really imagine triple tracking anything, and I only double the occasional vocal...maybe messing around more with mic placement and eq during tracking would help with this...

A guitar amp is, well, made for guitars. A keyboard amp is generally designed for higher fidelity. True, I suppose, but certainly not a rule. I think keyboard amps are great for live, but when you're playing out, people are hearing your keyboard in a room, and in the context of a bunch of dirty gui...

I think either of those might be useful, but I'd always rather mic an amp for something like that, especially if you have some kind of vintage tube gear. I think something like the nord - which, to me, sounds pretty good but is still a bit too clean - could really benefit from some real tube crunch ...

Yeah, I'd say you gotta buy the disc to hear it - but it's worth it, the book's great, too. I can't believe nobody else's checked this out - it's like it's made for tape-opers!

I love my reissue '71 custom tele, but it's not mexican - in the 90's they made them in Japan; like the jazzmaster reissues, these japanese versions are often said to be better than the new mexi's and the original 70's ones. Mine's awesome. Of course, I play with a guy who's been really stoked about...

I sincerely wish I had met Wesley Willis. He died, right? Working in a record store, I once met Prince Paul and the RZA. They were nice, but I think they thought I was just some white idiot. Which I was, and am. I met Mike Watt on the tour for his first solo record, sitting in his van. He was kind o...

Well, I'm no pro - I just record my own music at home - but I have some maybe related info: I used to work as a sound guy for film, doing mostly location dialog recording, and some post-production stuff. In my experience, film school kids were sort of scoffed at, with the general impression being th...
