Thanks for the advice. Hopefully moving in will kill some of the verb. The other issue here is that the place has a giant boiler on top of it dating back to 1960 or something, so there is this constant hum throughout the apartment, always. Grrrrrrrr. I shoulda just recorded electronic music in headp...

Baffle fort: Am I dreaming?

The good news: I'm moving into an a fantasitc new apartment. The bad news: Aside from the kitchen and the bathroom, the bulk of the place revolves around an approx. 12' x 20' living room with a super high (25'?) ceiling leading up into a loft. Hardwood floors. The reverb tail of a hand clap in this ...

Haha. I don't think anything has ever prevented me from connecting gear. But since "crappiness" is so subjective (I know, it's not, but really, it is), and can unnecessarily pop up in so many places and for so many reasons, I thought it would be useful to be able to identify an impedance mismatch wi...

Audioboffin, how do you respond to the Shure article referenced earlier (http://tinyurl.com/el9bh) which basically goes so far as to suggest that with modern circuitry, impedance matching can negatively affect your sound and it hasn't been a concern since 1804 or whatever? That article is bugging me.

Audioboffin - THAT'S the sort of description I was hoping to hear, thanks. I couldn't agree more about analog gaining (obviously) .. but am perpetually short on nice preamps. I wonder if a single PM1000 channel strip module could be coerced into operating independently?

Yes, unfortunately I'm the only one involved in this particular project. I'd love to have the luxury of stepping outside my body and moving mics around while continuing to sit there and play. Anyway, this is kind of what I was guessing about 3-to-1 .. its a shame the Internet is as full of informati...

3-to-1

All, I am trying to understand the 3-to-1 rule as it applies to capturing a mono-compatible stereo image of an acoustic guitar. Application of the rule is obvious in situations where a mono image of each of two different sound sources in close proximity are being captured - like a singer with an aco...

Quite interesting. It is relieving to know that the need for concern is minimal when dealing with "fairly modern equipment" (as Rod put it) or otherwise "modern systems" (as brian put it) .. which, from what I'm gathering, the MS-20, XBase-09, and 303 are. This is a relief. Rod's distinction of soli...

Brian - I love it. Thank you for the valuable insight. It's too bad a similar technique doesn't exist for balanced inputs (as I am faced with), but still, the method you describe is really, really good to know. I wonder if I may sneak a follow-up in here, by asking if anyone can describe the audible...

Thanks for the suggestions. I have no issue with running these guys straight in and addressing any gain deficiencies digitally. Still, determining input impedance would be a useful thing to know how to do, if it didn't require disassembly.

Input impedance

Hello all. I am wondering if there is a way to measure the input impedance of my Apogee AD-16x. I ask because I want to record some synths, and am wondering if it is necessary to pass their signals through a DI Box / preamp chain. I want to be able to objectively determine this, since I'm not comple...

m-audio sputnik

Has anyone had a chance to use this mic yet? It is new and thusfar unreviewed. I like what I'm reading about it, but all available information at this time is pretty much directly from m-audio. I'd like to know if the sound is actually consistent with what m-audio claims. http://www.m-audio.com/prod...
