Well let's be honest - low frequencies are going to travel through damn near anything you put in their way. But the general rule for acoustic control is to have a very dense surface, followed by a dead-air space, followed by another dense surface. Professor, you're right about how we build walls - ...

I was planning on using a solid-core door on the assumption that more mass = more sound absortion. I know that there are very expensive acoustic doors that are metal and filled with acoustic insulation, but will a standard foam insulated metal door provide better isolation than a solid-core wood do...

As for glueing them together, I'd have to disagree - sorry. If the option is Liquid Nails or nothing, I'll take LN. Sure GG is better. But no bonding between them is just asking for buzzing and rattling in the small inescapable cavities between the layers - I've heard it too many times and there's ...

Re: desinging a new space and looking for input (long!)

i'm new at professional recording (and i use the word 'professional' loosely in my case :) ). i am looking to create as nice a space as i can for my humble budget. ideally i can set myself up with something that i can grow into a bit. to put this all in perspective when giving input: I'm not going ...

After framing your room with 2x4's, consider some 1x2 firring running perpendicular to the studs. Mount the drywall on the firring only and NOT into the studs. This will emulate somewhat the effect that RSIC clips and hat channel will give you - though not as good on the bottom end for sure. Bryan,...

Appears to be a primitive root type (ie skyline) not a quadric residue type like most symetrical ones everybody makes. ?Our prime number is 138,167.? !!!! Interesting that they don't quote that prime as the basis for the design in the class............. I have to think about that one for a ...

Of course, it does mention that no tines are the same length - which I know isn't really possible given the number of tines they cut. But the implication is that they intended to have randomness and not a repeating pattern as we usually see in quadratic diffusors. Well you figure that for a prime o...

I know there is math that needs to be considered in all of this, but I like the concept from Massenburg there of random sizes in random arrangements, and even the number of "tines" in the room is a prime number (138,167 total tines) which is as removed from a formula as you can get. Jeremy, You're ...

I'm definately not looking at straight up diffusion.. the room isn't that big. 9.5 feet x 22 feet.. less than ideal, but I have my console and speakers set up at one end of the room (not at the walls, but you know, speakers 4 feet out from front wall.. it works well) , so I'll need to do a bunch of...

And then I felt bad for the guy who has to do the dusting. -J Just had the same thought. That's insane. J, isn't it though?   Actually - one of the reasons it works is the rooms sheer size - you figure it's 24,300 c.f in volume..... and that helps a lot. George Massenburg is a prett...

My reading comprehension is a little shaky at times, Rod....:) Thanks for clarifying the points in the book, that helps a lot. Re: Room within a room - what about the floor?

The part I don't get though is the floor, in that "room within a room" idea. I have a concrete slab in the garage, and I read that it's actually good to have that and just lay the flooring over it as long as it's vapor sealed and all. But since the concrete floor is part of the foundation (attached...

Jon,

You can view a schematic of a star grounding system here - figure 6.3:

I hope that helps - it's really not all that deep.
