I would completely agree that two grand for a piece of gear with no assurance of functionality is a huge risk. I also concur that it is not too much to ask a feller like Larry to fire things up. That said, it is important to note that "two grand" was a suggestion, and his role in this sale is as a t...

I got a nice e-mail back from Analog Devices and they had these substitutions: LM301AN -- ADI equivalent OP07 CA3140E -- ADI equivalent AD711 While rooting around for additional information, I found these two threads as well, from the first of several helpful Quantum owners to contact me here on TOM...

Here is an excerpt from a 1998 Tape Op interview Todd Costanza did with John Vanderslice of Tiny Telephone. This conversation happened right after he acquired the Quantum that was discussed three years later in Mix. "Todd: You're getting a new board... John: Yeah. It's a Quantum Audio Arts board fro...

As busy as he is, I think it is really cool that Larry has offered to help find it a home and give the TOMB first dibs on this desk. It would keep it in Elliott's extended recording family, and continue a tradition that the two of them started. Regular readers may remember that almost nine years ago...

Thanks a bunch for the reply. According to Mitch Easter, "The really old stuff was done on a Quantum console with limited EQ... 414s on BD and SN, probably EV CS-15P on toms, and SM7s overhead. Then, white noise derived from a radio was keyed to the snare to generate brightness! No room mic. these s...

Jon Ulrigg is a nice fellow and knows his ribbon mics. I got an estimate for a re-ribbon of an old RCA paintbrush of $135. Thankfully, the mic was fine, so I did not need it. You might ask him -- or get one of his already modded microphones. http://www.shinybox.com/

Supafuzz has dibs on the Uher 4000 and an unadvertised Gates Unimote 70 project. To clarify my desires, I am not a snob or unrealistic. I would settle for 9 knobs on my faders that matched. I'm open to a neglected instrument, an old shortwave radio, scratchy folk records or esoteric books rescued fr...

Troubleshooting and Fixing a Quantum Board

I just acquired a Quantum QM-8P from a fellow Tape Op'er -- thanks Kelly! Like most new owners of old gear, I have been searching high and low for information on Quantum consoles, anecdotes, schematics, history, and of course, other owners. I started this thread in the hope that I can find out more ...

the beatles are a fine touchstone for the best -- and some of the worst -- mono to stereo mixes. early on, capitol dropped the ball in the most stupid way with not only faux stereo, but chopping albums to bits and resequencing the tracks. i agree that the later stuff -- that first george and then ph...

from what i know, that 40-4 is built like a tank. it might not take too much to get it going, but if it is a bear, i'd explore. there are a few cool exceptions, like the revox-lamb, but even it was created so you could enjoy an hour of quadraphonic music while you swung a medallion with your honey. ...
