Audimute sheets vs moving blankets?
I found some second-hand audimute blankets on craigslist, and I'm wondering if anyone has compared them to general-purpose moving blankets. I'd just be using them to hang on some parallel walls in a small corner of the basement studio that we want to use for tracking vocals, just to cut out any echo...

The other thing is that you're going from a balanced output to an unbalanced input, so you're going to be experiencing a 6db signal loss anyway. Between that and the trim knob, you really shouldn't have any trouble hitting the tape at something approximating -10. That said, I really like the sound o...

Wiring up our Tascam MS-16
We're finally getting our MS-16 hooked up via a patchbay. For flexibility's sake (we run a hybrid set up with a Mac & MOTU828 and also a board that is mostly unbalanced--a Yamaha RM2408) we are going to use both the balanced and unbalanced inputs on the board. The manual states that we shouldn't hav...

Those articles are informative, although troublesome. I'd always read that it was okay to run unbalanced lines up to 20 feet, this says no more than 3 meters! This article also seems to suggest that in the one important set of unbalanced to balanced connections that I'll be running: Unbalanced +10 b...

One major use of the return for me would be to send a guitar signal from control room to guitar amp. would this work with balanced returns? Yes, in fact it'd be a bad idea to try it with an unbalanced line because of the length. However, you'll get the best result if you use a reamp box. (Edit: i w...

There should be no loss of gain going from an unbalanced source to a balanced input. Oh, I think I understand now. You lose gain when unbalancing a balanced signal, but you don't lose gain when sending an unbalanced source to a balanced input. Do I have that right? All y'all espousing the virtues o...

Balanced vs Unbalanced; how much does matching matter?
I'm rewiring my partner's basement studio, a hybrid studio running with a Yamaha RM2408 mixer, a Tascam MS-16 and a Mac running Logic through an MOTU828 and an ADA8000. All the outputs from the board are unbalanced (-10), so I was prepared to wire up the unbalanced ins/outs from the tape machine. Ho...

Here's a question: Do balanced patchbays work ok with unbalanced inputs? I have 2 balanced 1/4" patchbays (32 points each) and 1 unbalanced RCA patchbay (36 points). I have the mixer inputs wired from one of the balanced patchbays (default setup is to have 8 outs from the soundcard routed to 8 chann...

preamps on insert loop
This is our proposed new studio diagram. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3087/2612268439_f68a63c80e_b_d.jpg Basically we have a Yamaha MG16/6fx mixer, and we're running the signal path out the insert send, to our (cheap but fun sounding) tube preamps and then to a firepod, then back out to the mixer ...

trodden, we're looking mostly for 1/4" balanced or unbalanced rack-mountable bays. Mostly to route things from mixer to and from computer and various tapedecks and outboard gear. If anyone is curious, our project's website is http://departmentofsafety.com/ We've been here for 6 years, so you can tru...

WTB: Donate unused patchbays, insert snakes, patches, etc
I run a non-profit all-ages venue housed in a decomissioned firehouse in Anacortes, WA, and we're currently working on building up our studio. Because we're not a commercial project, we try to get as much stuff donated as possible. If anyone has anything they don't need cluttering their life, plese ...
