Re: stapes vs. the ghetto army
With 57s, the stapes, and a cheaper LDC like an AT4033 or Studio Projects C1, you'd have the bases covered for a while. That's the core of what I use these days, along with the aforementioned ribbon (121 in my case). I use that fucker all the time, just waiting to tear it.

Re: Empirical Labs Fatso
The brit mod is that cool, huh? I bought mine without. What do you use it on?
So as not to divert the thread, it sounds like the Distressor would work better for you. By the looks of it the Fatso seems like a buss comp, but I could be wrong.

Re: Stereo Buss Compression
This is not a high dolla solution, but I love my Langevin Dual Vocal Combo. I just used it on the 2 buss on my last record and it rocked. I had borrowed a 1969 too; those things seem better suited to tracking imho.

Re: Mapex Drums experience?
Yep. If you're looking at older drums, pop the rims off and check out the bearing edges. If they're in good shape, you're in business.

Re: Mapex Drums experience?
Gretsch drums rule the vibe school, with a close second going to the keystone badge era Ludwigs.
If I got into spending lots of cash on a kit, I'd have to go Pork Pie over DW, Sonor, etc. Those Pork Pies are AMAZING.
Too bad I can only afford the snare

FWIW, the strip clubs are "pink". Could go either way. . .

Re: stapes vs. the ghetto army
Yep, didn't go as far as to sell my Oktavas but I sure reach for the Stapes a whole lot more. Mine are first run too, but I'm sure the new ones sound just as good and might get you laid quicker.
