Re: Misconstruing Albini

I read Pitchfork regularly, primarily as a way to hear about bands and albums that I wouldn't normally encounter. I find them to be pretentious as fuck, and this is coming from a guy who could well be considered to be pretentious. But yeah, compression? Albini? Hello? He talks about compression, and...

Re: Smells like indie spirit

"Indie" is the new "Alternative," which was the new "Punk"....

Quoth my bassist, as we watched a show at the Troubadour over the summer:
"I just realized that indie music is going to totally eat itself in about two years."

Do spammers even bother to check what type of forum they're dealing with?

Apparently not.

Re: layering sounds

Keep in mind that for some sounds you might want to line things up a little less than precisely, to make the resulting hybrid seem bigger.

If you want later breakup, you're going to want higher-wattage speakers.

Re: Anybody ever use one of these tremolo add-ons...

I've been wondering about those for a while, they're extremely sexy...

Of course, considering that I already own a Tremulator (mmm) and my main amp is about to become a Silvertone 1484 as soon as UPS shows up, I'm not really hurting for tremolo.

Re: Pacific Pro Ribbon deal by versuviusx please read!

As a noob who may or may not be interested in this venture (depending on how much money I have at the moment... going to college does not pay well at all), I'd just like to say that the very fact that this is being organized at all is extremely badass. So, whichever deal finally gets decided on, I w...

Re: Smooth (Santanas) Vocal Effects....how?

It sounds like there's a bit of distortion on it, though I'm not sure what they got the distortion from - probably applied afterwards via effects, I think.

Maybe they also doubled it? Like, copied and hard panned? That might be me hallucinating.

Re: Please critique my rough mix.

Sounds great. One little beef might be that it feels kind of unbalanced in the stereo spread - the piano is hard panned, it seems ("seems," because computer speakers may lie to me), and that makes the other side feel a little empty, like I'm leaning towards the other speaker... Did that make sense?

There's also Audacity, which is really quick-and-dirty but can be effective.

Re: Quantegy update 1/30/05

One thing I wonder is, how much would it cost to build a pro-level tape recording machine these days, and how much could that be reduced with modern technology? While the general use of tape seems to be on the way out, it seems to me that if shockingly expensive boutique guitar and amp makers can su...

Re: Do legendary albums have one consistent sound?

Better than average for radio, certainly. Quicky, catchy song with words longer than two syllables? On the other hand, punks yelling about politics is nothing new, and any sort of actual ability is going to stand out on the cesspool of radio. But hey, those dudes are old by now. ;) They started up i...

Re: Do legendary albums have one consistent sound?

Returning to the original topic, I find that a lot of the most amazing albums are less consistant in style that they are in sonic structure. Take Ziggy Stardust - you have a variety of songs ("Five Years" is not the same style as "Suffragette City") but a continual sonic thread... most of the same c...
