I'd go with the Presonus on the theory that any transformer is better than no transformer atall, and you aren't guaranteed the Mackie is fixable. Trying to get a noise fix on a prosumer mixer you'd have to find a tech who understood what you wanted from it.

Wasn't there a handheld you could also use as a 4 channel interface for a PC via USB? I always meant to look at one of those, and can't remember what it was.

How do you have that woofer wired?

I don't know if the composition skill would be there at that age?
