Re: Old-sounding Reverb Plugin
Altiverb has some great old impulse responses. The bill Putnam chambers, the Lex 200, spring reverbs, and some vintage digital reverbs. some of these verbs sound very very nice.
The Rverb is good, but has it's limitations.

Re: A Live mic for Nosey voices
yeah, I thought about that option. I found the other singers (throught the 58a) to be much smoother over the PA. When I was on the mic for soundcheck, the beta sounded better, but my voice is much lower than this guy's voice. I think maybe the beta worked against me in this case! and when the shoe d...

A Live mic for Nosey voices
I just did a job where I was mixing a country/western band and the singer has a nasaly voice. I had him singing through a SM 58 beta, but I had to do major cuts on his channel to appease the guy in the crowd who looked like neil diamond and kept telling me that his ears would explode if I didn't cut...

Re: CDR to send to mastering lab?
I am also a DIY sort of guy. In fact, attempts that I have made to master my own record have failed miserably because I'm too close to the material. I'm not going to send it to a mastering house, but I'm going to probably have a friend do it right. As for your project, I have seen a lot of artists f...

Re: CDR to send to mastering lab?
I wouldn't let this guy's hemming and hawing make you feel like an idiot. You're better off doing some research on other mastering engineers, perhaps a friend, or someone you know will do a good thorough job for the same amount of money. It sounds to me like this is a project that would take more th...

rootsy recoding we did a couple nights ago. the classic protest song! M 149 tube, AT stereo mic, and an Octavia MK319 (or whatever that mic is). Done with minimal overdubs. Spread the word!

Re: SSL AWS 900
It's about time SSL comes out with DAW compatable medium sized board. The Otari Elite (A 1990 board) has all of the same features, but SSL gets to boast it's "super analogue" SSL sound. Still, quite a slick package I must say.

Re: Share Your Ridiculous Band Stories
HA HA HA HA !!! I remember hearing those in the halls of the Foster Bldng! The only problem is some guys didn't realize that they weren't actually supposed to ever USE them! That's why some of those guys aren't playing any more. My favorite thing to hear from the Foster building was the upper-class...

Re: To Many Tracks To Mix!!
What kind of overdubs are they doing that you consider "over the line?." I've tracked choirs where each voice was double tracked to give it that full sound. That's once case where It has to be done. If these guys are doing 3 layers of the same vocal line, I would draw the line. Whatever the situatio...

Re: The Definitive "How To Record Piano" post.
I would love to distant mic a a piano, but I cant. for one client, the "formula" I use is a pair of KM-84's inside of the piano, one pointing at the bass side, and one at the treble side... kind of an X Y sort of thing, and an M149 tube mic outside of the piano right where the curve is (this is a gr...

Re: The Necessity of Compressors?
compression is a time saver. If I had to automate everytime a vocalist got to loud, I would probably have a reputation for being not lazy, and slack is the only thing I'm good at! What's even better than compression is Waves Trans-X, which mitigates, or enhances transients. Obviously not good for ev...

Re: Does this guy know what he's talking about?
That's cause Bjork is a million doller bill! I know people who swear by tube mics over the neumann no-tube mics. They have put these mics side by side and compared them. that's fine. As for the virtual mixing board argument... I've become recently dis-mayed with digital mixing... not because I'm not...
