You should do it, it sounds like a great idea. How bad do you want to be engineering for a living? With that money you've saved up, you could find a place to intern, focus all of your time and energy into your craft, integrate into the local music scene and start getting some sessions. Sure, there's...

I have friends who earned enough money in high school and college to buy that much gear. I also have friends who didn't do a thing and were given that much money. Does it really matter how he got it? How to compete? Make better sounding records than him. Or maybe you shouldn't compete. Are you guys ...

Thanks for the responses. At the time, I didn't take note of the self-absorbed rambling and ambiguity that was in my post, my apologies. I posted this shortly after I made the decision and I've talked to quite a few people since then. As far as what I'm asking, it could all be boiled down to: How wa...

moving into the next phase of my career
My plan is to move to Portland in six months to do freelance engineering/producing and develop a career as composer/performer. What I'm looking for with this post is general insight, experiences, perhaps a link to a topic I didn't see in the search... Here's some background: In 2007 I earned a Bache...

Re: If there was software that made *lyrics* better...
AutoTune doesn't write your melodies for you. That's up for debate... It depends on how out of tune the vocalist is and the settings used on the plug-in... Also, if someone is doing a talking part, it will lock onto a pitch and create melodies. I know I know, not the point of the discussion....

About month ago I bought an LX20 on ebay for $70 after shipping. Pretty hard to beat for 8 tracks of digital. Here's what my band does with a 4-track setup: B52 on kick 414 overhead 57 on guitar cab DI for bass/sax player (plays sax through 421 into bass rig) So you could do Kick Overhead guit1 guit...

Depending on where you tour and what time of year it is, you can plan to stop by farmer's markets to pick up food. It wasn't shipped 1000s of miles to get there or processed in a factory. If you're making CDs, you can use cases made out of recycled cardboard or NOS jewel cases. Obviously the most fu...

adat into my 'puter
I want to transfer tapes from an LX20 to my computer. I'm looking for something that is as simple as ADAT to usb or firewire, minus all the mic preamps and other gadgets such a device normally comes with. I'm having trouble finding something like that.
Does it exist?

There's been a lot of good stuff said in this topic. Among the most important is probably "know your worth" I was recording my own band when I was 15. I did my first paying gig recording my friend's band on a digital 8 track when I was 16 for something like $100 for four songs. Then I moved up to $2...

my rule has always been : be more sober than the band. That's a good one. The studio I work at is a residence production facility, so pretty much whatever goes. We always manage to not have clients that cause problems, so that's nice. Pretty much everyone at the studio burns, so weed is a very norm...

Who should I get to press 7"s (besides URP)
So, I've learned the hard way that URP is crap. I have to disapprove of the test pressings that were sent.
I did a little research and it seems everyone else is a lot more expensive then them.
So, who's everyone's favorite record pressing company!?
