I just sprang for a Hairball "copper" kit. this will be my first 500 series module and my first "british console style" pre. (they say it is not supposed to be a 1073 clone, merely inspired by that sound.) I've done a fair bit of building and modding and have the right tools so I don't expect to hav...

My only experience with "clone" sm57 mics was in a live situation, not studio, but the difference in sound between them and a real 57 were night and day. I don't remember what brand but the guy who bought them was bragging about how cheap they were for "the same thing, just made in china". They were...

I've never been a particularly active member as far as posting, but I do value my connection to this place and usually click through once a week or so to see what people are talking about. My recording activities tend to ebb and flow too, so when I am gearing up for a project or in the middle of som...

Nice to see LBAL and tragedy getting some love here. My feeling on the trend towards overall distortion in a lot of recent punk/HC/garage records, is that it can either feel gratuitous and gimmicky, or, like in the example you posted, it can be an attempt to make the record feel as much like the liv...

IS it 60hz type noise or something else? did the noise come on strong after being quiet previously, or emerge slowly with time? has the amp been modded or worked on recently? I can think of a few things- dirty or damaged input jack, bad power supply caps (unlikely in a newish amp) but more info woul...

When my RE20 was stolen about a year ago, I replaced it with a heil PR40. The main intended application for both mics was bass cab, which they both do well, but I think I like the PR40 a little better, at least I can get a sound that work for me a little quicker with it. I have also gotten good resu...

Good people, I have two pieces for sale. I am not the original owner on either but they have been well taken care of. I am located in chicago and would prefer local P/u but will ship upon cleared check or paypal payment- shipping is buyer's responsibility. I will consider offers, especially on a dea...

I totally agree that there's no substitute for touring to move units. But I would throw a positive spin on that by suggesting that people buy things at shows as a souvenir of the live experience- some might get the t shirt but others might get the CD or whatever. I have definitely gone to see bands ...

Having tech skills and a creative background, you'd probably fit in well at a college or University in tech support- The School of the Art Institute and Columbia College hire regularly, full and part time. but there are many other schools in the area too. It may not be engineering, but at least you'...

How flat and smooth is the floor that this riser will sit on? That will have a lot of impact on how easy it is to spin, and what technology would work best. I would add to the "slick" camp if the floor is reasonably flat and smooth. Buy a chunk of 1/2" thick UHMW plastic from McMaster-carr or anoher...
