KoffeeKommando, not to be dismissive of your experience in any way, but to my mind "rough testing" in audio is not testing. As you know, hearing follows belief, and I feel compelled to take your sonic evaluations of cable with a huge grain of salt given that they were made in a context where your be...

For those who are fuzzy on exactly how to do the TapeOp, transformer mod, I've made a video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDVzXAgOFYw

I made up some Canare cables...didn't like them very much sound wise. Especially the guitar cable, poor "clarity". Mogami always sounded better to me (but can seem "bassy" or "muddy" depending). Interesting, did you do any double-blind testing? We are all susceptible to "hearing" that extra $.50 pe...

If it's for installation sound, it's probably fine. If it's for the studio or the stage, I would recommend something quad-core with a woven shield. I just hate working with bulky cable that doesn't bend well. And Canare's quad core is what, $.50/foot?

Boom goes the dynamite. I was going to recommend Edcor as well. Mouser does have thousands of transformers but almost none of them are designed to pass 20hz-20khz gracefully.

I hear ya. I was working at a studio that had just got a "new" old U87. We threw it up on vocals and it was just a touch "boxy." We put up the old one and voila, it was gone. Maybe it was the mics? Maybe the singer was 2 minutes more warmed up than with the first mic? Hard to say.

Cool, thanks for the update. Y'know what would be cool would be a box with a 1k linear pot and the transformer from your SM57 in it that you could switch in and out. Plus maybe this passive filter: http://www.prodigy-pro.com/diy/index.php?topic=45454.0

Here's a question to ponder: how does the "impedance mod" affect a transformerless 57? I understand that much of the impetus for a heavier load on the mic has to do with reducing transformer ringing at high frequencies. So is there still a benefit of a input impedance without the transformer? I gues...

You lose 12 db of output if you remove the internal transformer. That makes them useless for vocals but great for kick drums. Actually, with a good pre they are extremely use ful for vocals. My transformerless 57 into Hamptone HJFP2 (usually with gain cranked all the way) is one of my favorite voca...

BTW, if you want to get rid of the login and godaddy BS without messing with the site's code, add this to the CSS stylesheet:

#logindisplay, .blurb {
display:none;
}

Looks really nice. A couple of ideas: Personally, I would lose "a very simple Blumlein microphone configuration" and just use "I record live music with two figure-8 microphones placed in an optimal position to record the truest stereo image possible." "Very simple" kind of sells you short--to some i...

API-style preamp PCBs + DOAs giveaway

My friends from Bearcat Audio (a couple audio tinkerers out of Montreal) are giving away a pair of API 312-ish PCBs and assembled 2520-esque opamps next month. We're taking entries through my site a www.diyrecordingequipment.com. Clearly, you've got to know what you're doing a bit to make use of the...
