I have used sticky gels and even taped paper towels to cymbals to tame crash and excess sizzle. I always try to get the source to sound like I want it to. I'm not that good at mic placement!

Ampeg Gemini is a great combo for basses. I have used the 1x12, but I bet the 1x15 sounds great too.

Tascam TSR8 can be found in that price range on the 'bay sometimes. Maybe a little more w/shipping.

Mine is a workhorse, and is 1/2 inch.

Wellll...I spoke too quickly. Now MY 301 is producing a loud hum when it is in mode 2,4,5 or 6. Does that sound like a leaky cap somewhere to you guys?

No shame in asking at all. I swear my old Space Echo has moods. Somedays it behaves much better than others.

It's always nice to hear about one that was behaving badly and then was coaxed back to normalcy with some TLC.

There are a couple of things I can think of. As the tape is feeding in across the heads it is fed through a path that has 2 pads on either side. If there is not enough pressure being exerted on the tape by these 2 pads the tape will not feed across the heads with enough tension, and that has created...
