You should check out NI's Session Strings, or, if you need more flexibility, Session Strings Pro. On the plus side, it's tried-and-true: it's on a staggering number of popular recordings.

On the negative side, it's on a staggering number of popular recordings. ;-)

Just want to add that whatever approach you decide on, Harry Fox has a great function on their website where you can license well-known music for very limited release; the cost varies depending on what arrangements the artist and publisher have worked out, but you might find it to be surprisingly ch...

Happens all the time. I think it's because so many records remain unfinished, or never get pressed to physical copy. But then I'm not a real well-known "mixing guy," more of a "tracking guy," so I see a lot of records mosey on down the trail without any clue where they're headed... In general, when ...

Yea, the best thing to do is just own it. "I just fucked up. We need to fix it. I'm sorry." I think it's good to do something else for them, too, like comp 30 mins of the session, or some such token of appreciation for their understanding.

Respectfully, Larry, it's not the same industry it was in 1996; I know very few people who are able to make a living on engineering work alone; more and more of my colleagues (myself included) are branching into video game work, publishing, sync licensing, and other avenues as means of creating a mo...

Ha, your tape headaches made me think of another time I had completely forgotten about: I was tracking a band to tape, and the machine was situated in such a way that I couldn't comfortably watch it's meters while tracking, and this was in an "open room" environment (meaning I was monitoring with he...

Spent two days doing Mac maintenance: opening every single session, losing the unneeded bits of audio when possible, trashing prefs and ditching useless plug-ins and other programs, repairing disk permissions. 30gb more space and a much smoother operation for the really big sessions now! Last week I...

I'm really surprised it's taken this many posts for someone to mention the Ibanez AD-80. Not sure how the reissues sound, but the originals have an absolutely gorgeous tone...The only bummer is the 2x 9volt power requirement.

Look up Nat Priest at Fluxivity Studio. If he can't help you, I'm sure he can point you in the right direction.

Isn't one of the Chrisses from Death Cab fame on the board? I know he's real knowledgable and active in analog work.

Definitely wait until you're all moved in before you get it biased and calibrated. As for techs north of Seattle, I would start looking in Olympia. Both the analog-inclusive recording program at Evergreen and Calvin Johnson/Dub Narcotic are apt to be good resources.

At this point, you're probably considering the pros and cons of moving this machine yourself. Pros: - you'll feel like a real man for doing it yourself - you can pay your buddies in pizza and beer for their help! Cons: - potentially serious damage to your back and/or feet - potentially serious damag...

Ever moved a tape machine up a flight of stairs before? You're in for a grueling day of work. In all honesty, I wouldn't consider this a DIY scenario. What you should do is take out all the cards from the machine, pack them up real nice, then hire the best moving company (LLC, with insurance) that y...

The first time I sat down to mix a record on a real console was a big "Oh shit!" moment. The mixes were super dense, the songs quite dynamic, and as the first day of mixing wore on, it became apparent that I had no idea what I was doing, and that some noisy channels on the Neve were more trouble tha...
