Re: How would you cop this bass sound?
sure you can roll off treble but you can't kill that sustain unless you/bassist has very good string muting technique, or you palm mute. the whole thing with flats is that lack of sustain. This is it. I know I play very differently with flats than rounds. I can get away with holding notes a touch l...

Re: Deluxe Yankee Hotel- a production master class
YHF is such a cool blending of Jay Bennett and Jim O’Rourke, not to mention a great band and inspired songs. I’m just getting into this release, and agreed, it’s a high lesson in production and making great (and bold) choices. I remember at the time of its release being bummed that it wasn’t Summert...

Re: Hot tips for recording a mandolin?
Giving yourself mic options for the mix is smart. If the room sound isn’t that great, I’d get those mics in fairly close and judiciously high-pass as much as you need to. I prefer woody over sparkly with mando, so I might situate the mics a bit higher than the strings and point down toward them if y...

Re: How would you cop this bass sound?
That’s a pretty great bass tone. I love a Precision with flatwounds, and on mine I recently moved the pickup deeper into the body, which helped reduce some of the really low lows and get it more into that thumpy, woody range.
So…with what others have said, the right setup on your bass can help, too.

Maybe a little mid-side to pull the snare down a bit but keep the cymbals where you like them?

Helps when the mastering engineer sprinkles magic unicorn dust all over it, or whatever it is you do to make it sound right.MoreSpaceEcho wrote: ↑Sun Jun 19, 2022 9:48 amI just said this same thing on Jay Reynolds' post, but this record is also terrific, was a pleasure to work on, and you all should listen to it!

sounds great, i love how the vocal feels like it's next to your ear, great mix Thanks, man - I don't really know what to do with my voice, but really love how folks like Howe Gelb and Richard Buckner just put the vocal right out front, warts and all. Drumsound put together an excellent mix of the c...

Re: 4Track All-Stars w Chris Garges
And, of course, he added a little easter egg for me: yelling “Jay Reynolds rules!” when he got to the door of the tracking room in the take on one of the songs. I didn’t catch it right away since it was under the song’s outro, and then I spent a couple minutes trying to figure out what was going on...

Hey all...just finished this one, and it's got some very cool cameos by a few Tape Op peeps, both in front of and behind the glass (and in some cases both). For better or worse, it was the first time I really committed to writing for myself and seeing these songs through to completion. Learned a lot...

It’s been incredibly fun to watch so far. George’s humility in discussing what Clapton can do is astounding.
