Mbox question

I'm pretty new to digital recording so please forgive a possibly stupid question:

Thinking about buying the Mbox (and Pro Tools LE for OSX) and wondering if the USB is the only connection I need for recording or must I use both the USB and the SPDIF in order to record? I ask becasue my laptop does not have an SPDIF connection.

Just the USB, the SPDIF is just an I/O on the interface
