??Odd drum head size-23.5" Ludwig 'universal'??

Post by Electro-Voice 664 » Fri Dec 16, 2005 4:16 pm

Anyone know where to buy a 23 1/2" drum head?
The drum is Ludwig 'Universal' Model 8"X23.5".
It has sigle tension claws with no mounted lugs.
Anyway, it looks like fun, and I'd like to use it.
Thanks for any ideas.

maybe take the hoop down to a store and see if it will fit on a 24" head? Was the original mylar or calfskin?

The drum had no heads on it. Trying 24" seems like a good idea. Still I'm interested in finding out if theres odd sizes out there. Thanks

Contact Ludwig - ask them about the drum. Sometimes helps to have a photo (if you e-mail) or at least a good description of the badge as that will help them to date the drum.

Was this maybe an old marching drum? Sounds like a military band style or Scotch bass drum.

drummer friend of mine had Remo custom make heads for an odd sized drum. i'm sure it ain't cheap. are you measuring from bearing edge to bearing edge, not across the rim?

That drum was made for skin heads.Hence the weird size.A 24" head may fit as shells are made some what undersize anyway. It also may be that the old shell is out of round somewaht. Measure at several places around the shell. Hope this helped. :)

Pure speculation, but I thought someone told me one time that Premier had drums in odd sizes like that at one point and they had heads to match.

yup, some british brands had metric sizes back in the day so there are metric heads available.
