Good 1 RU power amplifier?

Post by jrsgodfrey » Sat Feb 04, 2006 12:41 pm

Can anyone recommend a decent 1 rack space power amp? It needs to drive a pair of Tannony PBM 6.5s.

Thanks.

Bryston 2B-LP amps are pretty choice, but also a little spendy. Balanced inputs, 12v remote trigger, 60w per channel, 20-year warranty - but also about $1500.
You might check out Symetrix, I think Crwon still makes a 1-space amp, and perhaps a few others. If you can find a used one, Elan Home Systems makes a model # Z-660 that is a 6-channel 30w amp in one space - more channels than you need, but you might find one cheap.
make sure that any 1-space amp you get has heat dissipation on the front or rear if you are not going to have a space above and below for ventilation.

Why the space limitation?

1 RU 'cus I want to be as portable as possible. No longer have a dedicated space, and I've found the PBM 6.5s pretty adaptable to unconditioned spaces. That bryston sounds sweet, but I need a cheaper one.

Perhaps my question should be: what's a good 1 RU amp in the $250+/- range?

Thanks for the leads.

In that range, you're going to have a tough time unless you find something used. Alesis & Samson both make amps in that price range, but I'm not sure about 1-space units. 1-space amps with any kind of power require torroidal transformers which increases the price.
If you open yourself up to 2-space models then there are plenty of contenders, and they will still be fairly light even if they are a little taller.

Go for the Hafler 50W/side model, it's one space and sounds great for the money.

I found a used Carver PM300, 1U and nice amp. 150w/side (not sure of impedance at that power rating). More than enough power for studio monitors, I'm even using it to push subwoofers.

I would buy the Crown over the Carver. I think the Carver has a higher power rating. Tuff choice really.

I used to own the Crown 1U amp. Not enough power, they're only 35w/side.

A Symetrix A-220 would be a good choice as well. It also has a headphone jack on the front....

Rane just came out with a 4x100 1U power amp. Not that you need 4 channels, but still pretty cool.
