Wooden Gear Racks - Where to buy like these?

Post by mrclean » Thu Aug 10, 2006 8:29 am

Does anyone know if the wooden racks shown on this book cover (Modern Recording Techniques by David Miles Huber) are available to purchase?

Maybe they're custom built but I like the idea of movable/stackable gear...

Speaking of racks, does anyone know where to gather some info on building them?

They might be from Nice Racks. http://www.nice-racks.com/

I'm going to be doing this soon, just bought some rack rails from sweetwater. I'm going for an "open" design where the rails are screwed into 2x2 (maybe something different) hardwood verticals, then I'm gonna tie the verticals together with skirting pieces that get biscuit joined in. I figure having an open design will give me easier access to my equipment.

Also those racks pictured could be made pretty easily from firniture grade plywood: rip a 4x8 sheet into 2 2x8 pieces, then use that as stock for the tops, bottoms and sides. Again, you can biscuit join it either as a lap joint or a 45 degree miter. you can trim the edges with glue-on veneer, should you be so inclined.

The ones in the original pic look nicer, with no knots. Also a couple of those racks are only 2U, which niceracks doesn't seem to sell.

This site might help.

BTW, I just built a 10U wood rack. It was very easy to do.
