Installing driver on partitioned drive
I need to install the driver for a Firebox. This is for a used computer that a tech guy/musician has set up for me. There's musical stuff on one partition, and normal stuff like Firefox on the other. Do I need to install twice to make the firebox works on either setup?

Yeah, I feel such the noob asking these things. 'F'in try it and see!' I imagine people saying. But...if I can only download on the side of the drive with Firefox..can I then install it on the other partition? I'm a mac guy, and not much of one at that. So far I've hooked the monitor up to the Dell and played with Nuendo and Tracktion and BFD. At work I've worked with Word and Excel.
Right off the bat I got confused because when you start up a program in Mac it'll ask where to look for a new project, not 'ok, where do you want to save whatever you're going to do?' I couldn't find anything! Let me worry about where I'm going to save when I try to save, dammit!!

two ideas...
1. download the driver on your firefox setup and burn it to CD.
2. download the driver with internet explorer on your music setup. then never ever open internet explorer again.
really, even though you have different hardware profiles, the drives should be accessible to both. I dunno if that means anything to you at this point but you can probably download the driver zip and stick it on your drive somewhere that's accessible to both setups.

Goddamnit.
I'm sitting here realizing this Dell doesn't have any freaking firewire inputs.
WTF?
My 6 year old Mac has Firewire!
I just bought a freaking Firebox!
Can I add a card to give it this ability?
This is just exactly like one of those things you read about people doing, isn't it.
Edit: the Soundblaster card has a Firewire input. Can I use that?
Heavy sigh.

ah! that sucks! Better to find out now than the day you were gonna hit record.
yes, you can add a card. I dunno anything about the firewire port on the soundblaster but I doubt it's very awe inspiring. contact the firebox people and ask if they recommend a card or chipset and shop from there. you might be able to find the info on a firebox forum.

Thanks for being there, syrupcore. One of these days I'll buy you a beer, I live in Ptown too.
Okay...I'm seeing cards as cheap as $25. I thought I was screwed for a minute there. All I have to do is wait til Monday so I can talk to someone & make sure I get the right one.

Is the Dell a 400SC? If so, the reason that it doesn't have Firewire is because the 400SC was built to be used as a server. Besides, Mac came out with Firewire long before PC manufacturers caught on.alex matson wrote:Goddamnit.
