Drum chains any one?

Post by Ethan Holdtrue » Thu Nov 30, 2006 9:12 pm

So dose any one care to share their audio chain for recording drums? I'd realy like to hear what other people do, what they use, if they compress or not... Etc...

Mine is kinda something like this:

Overheads: SM-81 flat, no pad > Symetrix > Some times a little BBE > Motu HD896 > Sonar

Center kit: AT 4050 flat, no pad, Omni > Chandler Germ > Motu > Sonar

Toms: SM-57 > Motu > sonar

Snare: 57 > Art tube-pac > some times a little tube-pac compression > Motu > Sonar

BD: AKG D-112 > some times a little BBE > Motu > Sonar

Recorded Kenny Soule (Nantucket, DAG) this week. Here's what sounded great on his kit for this particular session:

Kick- Lawson L47FET- Daking 52270 (25Hz filter, various cuts at 250, a tiny boost at 3k on the songs with the 20" kick, and a little boost at 80 on a couple of songs)

Snare- Audio Technica ATM450- Daking 52270

Toms- Oktava MC012 (hypercardioid caps, pads)- API 312s

OH- Spaced pair of KM184s- Neve 1272s

Room- cardioid-center MS setup with Audio Technica 4050s- Sytek MPX-4Aii- Distressors (Nuke, fast attack and release, not linked, just to make the room sound bigger, not for any crazy pumping stuff)

Under Floor Tom- EV 635A- Neve 1272 (on one occasion, this mic went to a Shure Level Loc nefore the 1272)

Additional Kit Mic (this one moved around a changed depending on the song but consisted of one of the following at any given time):
Over kick drum- Shure SM77- Neve 1272
Over front of kit- Shure SM77 with corrugated plastic tube over the top- Neve 1272- SSL Quad Compressor clone
Over front of kit- Beyer M101 with corrugated plastic tube over the top- Neve 1272
Inside padded 7x14 snare drum case in front of kit- Beyer M101- Neve 1272
Ambient Mic (guitarist talkback)- EV RE15- Neve 1272- ADR Vocal Stressor (just using Compex section)

I might be able to post pictures in a day or two.

Last Weekend:

Kick (inside, head off, off-axis to beater) - RE20 - 7th Circle A12 - 160X - AD16X - HDR
Snare - e604 on rim - A12 - 501 - AD16X - HDR
Tom 1 - e604 on rim - BlueTube - AD16X - HDR
Floor Tom - D6 - BlueTube - AD16X - HDR
OH's - C414's, Cardiod, 75Hz Rolloff engaged - TwinTrakPro - AD16X - HDR
Room - E200 - Eureka, some compression, some negative EQ - AD16X - HDR
Close "room" (mostly outside kick mic) - U47iFet - 7th Circle N72 - AD16X - HDR

The sound is "fun" rock with a classic rock feel. Sounded great for it's purpose.

This weekend will be the same artist, but different drummer, so perhaps I'll do something different...

Yup, there was another thread on this recently, but since I didn't participate in that one...

This week's setup:

Kick: Avenson ST0-2 (outside)
Snare: Sennheiser 421
OH: another Avenson ST0-2
Toms: Audio-Technica AT4051s (modified; wanted to try something other than 421s to get more tone - was happy with results)
Room: Lawson L251

Setup depends on drummer, song, kit, and the alignment of the moon and the stars.

UTFSF!

it can't be more than a page or two back.

last thing i did...going for small and close and mid-fi at best...

d112 outside of kick
at4040 side of snare
57 overhead
at3060 over the floor tom
tc30k snare height in front of kit, lined up with d112

all going into DAV pres except the tc30 which was a sytek

straight to computer via lavry blues

i never compress when tracking, in mix usually the kick and snare get some 3:1/4:1 distressor and those tracks get mixed with the dry...room mics get the drawmer 1969, generally pretty pummelled and again mixed in with the uncompressed. dunno what i'll do with these tracks though, they actually sound pretty cool straight up.

Last kit I did a few weeks ago.

Kick inside- audix D6- api 312 - api 560 - Pro Tools
Kick out - sub kick - gml pre - pro tools
Snare top - shure beta 57 - Focusrite ISA 430 - no comp activated - pro tools
Snare bottom - Schoeps CMC 5 - gml - Pro Tools
3 Toms- 414s - Euphonix CS 2000 pres - pro tools
fl tom bottom - sub kick -Euphonix pre -pro tools
hat - akg 451 - api 312 - PT
ride - akg 451 - api 312 -PT
OHs - akg c12s - gml pres - PT
Room stereo- Neumann M269c - manley slam with compressors working-PT
Talk back for the drummer because I could - neumann u87 - euphonix - not recorded.

This setup will change on the next drummer because I will be at a different studio probably. This was done at my work with some of my equipment added (APIs). We do not record many drum kits, mostly classical soundtracks due to the fact we mostly do post production.

I did it just because the studio has 8 U87s and it was there not doing anything. I know it is a crazy thing. But the studio has been around for about 35 years and our tabernacle has been around much longer than that. So vintage gear ends up in our hands taken out of the broadcast wing. We like it.
