I think the color scheme is fantastic! I would love to hang out there.

How is that drum riser built? Is it just sitting on foam?

The drum riser is 1/2" and 3/4" plywood, 6x8, with Auralex Platfoam under it. Indoor/outdoor carpeting glued down and nice aluminum trim on the edges. It works for some people, not for others.

"I find the towel rack for patch cables and EFX rack on wheels to be inspiring.
Do you have outside covers for it?"

The "towel rack" is really an ADA rail like you would use in a bathroom. Way more sturdy than a towel rack.

Not sure what you mean by covers but I think the answer is "no".

Cool color scheme - looks very Nickelodeon-esque.

TapeOpLarry wrote:The patchbay was a monster to build. Probably over a month. Every bay corresponds to a rack (top to bottom = L-R) or to equipment. Super easy to use and sort out. Clean labeling too, via XLS.
Did you put the snake wiring (between the racks and the patchbays) in the wall, or did you just hide it well?

I hope you didn't have to solder the connectors yourself.... :D

Cables are in a trench under the floor in the CR, and through buried (cement) conduits in the live room, popping out at panels for mics and headphones.

Kendra and I soldered with some help. 5000 points I think.

Time to rent the jackhammer! :D

Seriously, thanks Larry for showing us the final product. Like I said, very informative and inspiring for us, but more importantly, congratulations on your new and well-deserved upgrade. Looking forward to many more great records!

New to the board

Hey Larry

I'm rather new, just a couple of posts here and there so far. I love the new look, i'm actualy switching back and forth from some of your photos and some of RadioStars Studios photos for Desktop Wallpaper on my PC. So far the both of you are the two best looking studios I've seen.

Love the patchbays by the way, can I get your permission to use the rail idea on my own studio rack? How is it mounted? Glue, Screws, Both?

Thanks
-Steve

Looks amazing!

What did you wrap all your panels in? What are they? 703?

"RadioStars Studios"

Do you mean RadioStar in Weed, CA? I just was there interviewing Sylvia Massy-Shivy. Awesome place, great people.

"Love the patchbays by the way, can I get your permission to use the rail idea on my own studio rack? How is it mounted? Glue, Screws, Both?"

Use the rail idea! it's screwed in with the sheet metal screws they give you. Glue wouldn't hold worth beans.

"What did you wrap all your panels in? What are they? 703?"

703 2" and 1". Wrapped in burlap and treated with fire retardant. I would recommend not doing this in a commerical space, and would pay more for pre-treated fabric with a spec sheet that would make ANY fire marshall happy. We've skated by but this new advice is from some pro room designers.

Yes the very one in Weed, CA

I can't wait to read the interview. I love the fact that they put in a control room where the balcany used to be.

There are control rooms all over the place now. Theater, Balcony, next door, down the street.
