SM57 of compressors?

Post by Andrew707 » Mon Aug 13, 2007 8:46 pm

I'm just wondering what is considered the SM57 of outboard compressors. I'm guessing probably a 160 something, but I'm curious what everyone has to say about it.

Thanks,
Andrew

Hmmm...as flexible as those may be, they don't equate to the affordability of the SM57. Though, they might if I built my own. Hmmm...

hmmm...bracketed by, hmmm...

You guessed it. I would have to say the 160 x/xt/a would be the 57 of compressors. In every studio on earth, at least one, not expensive, always works...

160 for sure, it matches the predectablity, soild construction, and no frills operation. Also because of there long heritage, they are easy to find used cheap.

What property of the SM57 are we talking about? Is it the matte black casing? The silver grille? The proportions and durability which make it perfect for use as a doorstop? The honk? The ubiquity? The sensuous pleather zippered travel case?

yeah, I vote for the dbx vca comps too. They're cheep, easy to use, they don't break, they've been around forever, everyone knows what they sound like. They work on anything, but aren't really your first choice on a lot of things. They are used in the studio and live...

i was thinking the old dbx 166 not the 166 xl. but those are kinda like having 2 dbx 160's in one box.

Heavy on the "kinda"
I like the 166 too, the gate and limiter can really come in handy. I end up using them a lot for live stuff like DI bass.

definitely the 160x, 160xt, 160a compressors. Cheap, everyone has them and they're decent on everything. Also, I think the fact that most home studio guys have them as well as multi-million dollar facilities. ...just like the 57.

The only true great mic on this planet is the Shure SM-57. It is the most consistant in not totally sucking of anything ever built. All other mics are "application dependant".
