spoon video for 'the underdog' - shows how it was done?
i dig spoon's sound, 'the underdog' never really blows up in a grand climax like i want it to, i feel it's mixed conservatively, but, i watched the video, and i'm wondering how much is daniels wanting to recreate what was where for recording (besides the obvious fake people everywhere), or was it done for show?
just youtube search for 'spoon the underdog', it's hard to navigate with my damn laptop. sorry for the lack of the direct link.

i read an interview where Britt Daniel said the best bass sound he's ever been able to get is playing through a fender twin with an sm58 on it. On "The Way We Get By" they used a metal pick and I think he said they compressed it twice. i don't know much about the recording of the new record, but they did part of it at jim eno's home studio like the usually do, and then some at Trail of Dead's home studio. You should check out the "Small Stakes" video if you want to see them recording stuff, it's pretty neat.

My suggestion for getting that bass sound
Fender Jazz, passive pickups (maybe some old duncan antiquity II pups for the old 70s jazz tone)
Neck pickup full, bridge backed off a little bit
Old beach boys style dampening (Carol would use baby diapers... just a little)
Flatwound string for sure.
And then use a lot of left hand muting for the thuddy attack and quick decay.
And, pick up near the neck, not near the bridge.
also, it looks like he right hand mutes a good bit. Same thing, it's just a little tougher to play at faster tempos with right hand muting. It's just something to practice

Actually, I got something comparable tonight. My bass is a big part of not being able to cop anyone elses sounds - it's an old Tele bass, with a neck humbucker roughly the size of Rhode island that has more output than any known preamp can handle. But I pulled half of the magnets out of the PU, ran it into my V71 and then a Drawmer 1968 squishing the heck out of it, just letting the pluck poke through. It actually sounded pretty Beach Boys, which might as well be my goal with everything i ever do in life.
oh, and, TAPEWOUND STRINGS. I'll never go back to flatwounds again (and haven't played rounds in three years.)

I love Mike McCarthy's sound. I mean I loved the Trail of Dead stuff, the way the drums are compressed to hell and back and the crashes pump with the song it's crazy sounding and it works. then you have spoon, totally different but totally works for the band. I am hoping for a good interview with him sometime.
[Asked whether his shades are prescription or just to look cool]
Guy: Well, I am the drummer.

it's not really that great of a mike mccarthy interview, but it's a mike mccarthy interview nonetheless...

Michael McCarthy interview
I've known Mike for a decade or so and I recently approached him about doing an interview for TapeOp and he seems interested...stay tuned.
