how to use a sub

Post by majortom » Tue Nov 06, 2007 5:26 pm

This may be a dunmb question but I realized that when I read posts about "checking the sub" to hear what's going on down low how are you all doing this, that is...sub alone all the way up, sub up with other speakers, all the above etc...

thanks, tom

I just kick it in along with my normal monitors. I have maybe once listened to just the sub, just to listen to a problem thing.

I finally caved in and bought a Mackie Big Knob for my monitor routing... I have my consumer sub (a $90 Yamaha 8" sub from Best Buy) on a separate monitor button, and I'll spot check with and without the sub along with my regular monitors. Useful either way.

Yep, that's what I do. I have a nice, but still consumer, sony sub and I kick it in and out with my normal monitors using a switch.

I've thought about getting a sub, but I'm not sure how I'd tie it in to my existing monitoring setup. Right now I have an Adcom 535L amp feeding a speaker switch with 7 pairs of speakers ranging from Alesis monitor ones to various Sony, Technics and Boston Acoustics home stereo speakers. The Adcom doesn't have any kind of sub output on it, just left and right A and B.
My Mackie 1402 feeds the Adcom.
Any ideas what I would need to do to add a sub to this setup?

I run out to my car to hear the mix with a sub. :P

Someday I'll afford one for under the desk. :( The comments here made me think that might be sooner than later. $90, that aint' bad.
