Now you're talkin, best of both worlds.
except for the world of fun of playing through a really good sounding amp in the moment, on the tracking session, when the vibe of the moment is often important.

Two solutions to that:
  • You [or whomever you are recording] know you are an amp person, no reason to mess with modelers.
  • Split the signal somewhere so that you can play the amp live and still get a clean track of unamplified guitar. The normal way is the linked out of a DI, but of course there are plenty of ways to split a guitar signal in front of an amp. You can also re-amp as you play if you have good latency, i.e. record only the direct guitar and run the monitor to your DI/reamp/whatever.

But that is what we're talking about, preserving a non-amplified good-vibe take (DI, POD, etc) and then reamping it through an amp later for the sound benefits. If the amplified sound is what you (engineer) like, but the person playing is used to shoe-gazing, or if they're tracking guitar at home, it's a decent compromise. They still haven't found the weapons of mass-destruction, we should re-amp that.

don't really have the time to read all the responses, but in my own experience i find the real thing to have more dynamics than modelers (granted i've only used line 6 stuff). that said, the modelers have always sounded surprisingly good to me. the first time i used one, i expected it to sound totally canned but it didn't at all. i actually had the guitarist play the first song on the reel through both the pod 2.0 and a mesa mark IV i had mic'd with a 421 and an m500. i recorded both and played it back to the entire band, not telling them which was which. everyone picked the pod. i was kinda floored.

i have been thinking about getting one since. still haven't done it, though.

The Sans Amp Bass driver is a great tool.... the only worthwhile modeler ever made.

I have 2 ADA Mp1 - Classics (the last ones made not the original) and it has on board cab sim, all analog and it still sounds killer recorded. All analog path into a tube preamp. Better then any modeler for sure.

So the POD 2.0 is to beautifully-mic'd amp as Blair Witch Project is to a big budget Hollywood film.

haha yeah, i saw that opening night, knew nothing about the movie, loved it so much, went back the second night to see again.,

the third time was on vhs. it wasn't as good, but i saw it with a girl, and our clothes fell off. so that was good.
