which subwoofer?

Post by pixeltarian » Sat Feb 14, 2009 10:01 pm

I'm looking for an inexpensive sub to hook up to my tannoy reveal 5a monitors. I've been looking a these:

m-audio BX10s
JBL LSR2310SP
Tannoy TS8

or anything that's not on the average audio sites that you could suggest would be stellar!

thanks.

In this pricerange you should check out ADAM sub 7 as well. I did a comparison for a sub to match my own Questeds and a friend did the same for his tannoys (forgot the model). The Tannoy was not bad at all, but the ADAM added punch as well as just low end. Without going much deeper it just sounded so much more powerful. The Sub 8 is a little more expensive but worth it....
The only thing that bugged me at first about the Sub 7 was the fact that it only had one crossover point (@85hz). However my friend bought it (I went for the 8) and says it just works.

I picked up an Adam Sub8 on Ebay for about 1/2 price. It's got an adjustable X-over with a handy remote control device.

It's kinda funny because, since I use it only to extend the low range of my monitors, it's barely audible! - makes me wonder if a cheaper one would be just as good.
You just got to keep puttin' the good stuff out there

well... I can get a new BX10s for 330$ - so the ADAM sub 7 might be out of reach as it is, let alone the sub 8. and it is more for hearing a little low end response from time to time. I'll have the sub off a good 80% of the time anyway. what if you HAD to stay under 450 bucks?

I also came across the KRK K10S, and Ikey M-10S. the KRK has an adjustable LPF which seems like a nice feature.

does anyone have any experience with a sub-400$ subwoofer?

I bought a Yamaha 10" consumer subwoofer on closeout from Best Buy for4 $95.

It's rigged up as a second monitor channel with the Mackie Big Knob- that way I have it on or off depending on the material... but it's usually on.

Regardless, I'd bass-trap the room first before picking up a subwoofer- you'll hear room modes in a hurry if you don't.

that might be tricky. I'm behind the couch in the living room with a window behind my desk. it sucks, but it's all I got right now. I was thinking of making a few gobos and boxing off my work area though... maybe that'll help.

If I had $400 for a sub, I'd probably get one of these:

would it be easy to use XLR connections and make it easy to turn on and off - while keeping the main L and R monitors on?

I've heard really good things about this guy: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/HS10W/

More expensive than the m-audio you quoted, but I swear Guitarcenter puts these on special every time I'm in there for more like $400-450. Could be hallucinating.

I've got a pair of HS50Ms and I love them, so I expect that the sub that goes with them is equally as good.

I recently bought a Polk PSW-110 i think? Its consumer but around 250 with adjustable x-over and is actually really nice sounding.

and yes I have it set very low but it works great.

I just bought the newer KRK Rockit sub to go with my KRK V6 speakers and I love it. It is the newer one that has a footswitch to bypass it and it's crossover which is really nice. It's just barely on and makes such a huge difference in understanding what is going on in the low end.

I bought a Blue Sky Sub For $400 new, and I love, love, love, love it. It's only 100w but any more and it would shake my small room silly.

The most accurate sub for the price I could find.

So accurate in relation to what? Not trying to be a jerk, but just wondering what the reference would be?

Thought I might get called out on that

I had auditioned Event's old sub (can?t remember the name), some consumer subs (Yamaha, RCA,) found they all had too much 60-80 Hz, and did not translate well on other systems. I would assume this was because consumers love to hear the Kick punch them in the chest. I also use the internal crossover in the Blue Sky, and am very happy with the results. Also most consumer subs don?t have adjustable crossover points, which in a small room is absolutely necessary.

Sorry to be so vague before.

No that makes sense. Hard to get the point across on the internets some times.

The KRK sub I bought has a adjustable crossover too, which is nice. Putting the volume at what it states is 0 was WAY to loud. Had to turn it down quite a bit.
