What would be a good place to start to build my own pair of 1rack unit mic pres with 48v and pads. This would be my first try at this type of thing, but I am good with an iron, I have built 2 guitar amps and done MUCH fiddling over the years.
Oh, excuse me! Do you mind if I date yer punkin?

If I had those I'd be buying some of the Eisen DIY500 kits. Then all you need is a couple output transformers - either the API 2503 if you got 'em or some Cinemags would work fine.

of course you need a 500 rack - the A-Deisgns 500HR would get you there, or get the API lunchbox if you plan to expand. You could have a really nice pair of pres.

I agree with Mike on the Eisen. I built one 6 months ago using some PM2000 parts and it was very easy and the site has alot of great info. Jens is very helpful too if you need it.
He also sells custom face plates and racks.

Awesome. I already have an OSA 500 series rack, so I should be good there. These input trannies are too big to fit on a card. hmmm....

check out groupdiy.com. there's a lot of sweet 500 series projects goin right now. Also, by way of 1ru projects as specified, a memeber 3nity has a 312 project board for sale in the white market

My input trannies didn't fit in the conventional way either. I just attached the wires in the right places and attached the trans lying down with a wire tie and a slice of foam.

You could always build an API-style pre using the JLM Baby Animal Kit.

I plan on building one (with some help) this summer. I've already got some 2520 clones, and cinemag in and out iron--just need to order the barebones kit without iron & opamps. It might not be an exact API circuit, but I hope it will have a similar sound to a 312 or 512 when it's done.

most of these are pin compatible...

although some may require minimal mods to make them work best depending on the circuit they are in.

I'd go for the classicAPI stuff myself...
